Good morning, Lafayette. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 30th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Esther Tishman and Bob Hall walked through Lafayette today as part of their 3k mile journey that began on July 4 in Eugene and will end on Thanksgiving—today marks the 118th day of their walk as they connect with locals along the way.  Star City News
  • Local food banks and charities plan to boost support when SNAP benefits will end on Nov. 1 — they will increase mobile food pantries and simplify aid applications to handle record requests for food, housing and utilities, local leaders said.  Journal & Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hope Chapel Guest House in Lafayette, a historic building that served as a school, funeral home and church since the 1840s, offers ghost tours and paranormal investigations each Thursday and Sunday in October and is open for overnight stays the rest of the year. The tours use equipment such as EMF meters and spirit boxes to record reports of gentle paranormal activity like children's voices.  Journal & Courier
  • On November 8, the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra will celebrate its 75th season with a concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Long Center that will include the premiere of 'Star City Overture' by Edward Hart and works by Aaron Copland—using historical imagery and live narration to honor Lafayette’s bicentennial. A pre-concert performance by Purdue University’s string quartet and a free downtown social event will follow.  Journal & Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Purdue's planning documents state that three cultural centers serving minority students may be demolished to build a new residence hall that will add about 1,000 beds — a change that faculty say could break up important community spaces. The university is reviewing the plan and is inviting input through an online survey open until Friday.  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The government shutdown is blocking USDA loans that support low-income homebuyers in rural areas around Lafayette, and loan originator Cody Broshar said buyers must wait as the USDA review process remains on hold — state programs may offer smaller grants in the meantime. This delay could also slow market activity as sellers hold back their homes.  Star City News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Indiana WIC program, which serves over 150,000 local women, infants and children, may cut food benefits beginning November 1 if additional emergency funds are not provided, as current funding ends Oct. 31. Experts warn that without extra money, local clinics could face difficult choices to continue offering nutrition services.  Journal & Courier

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local realtor Donald Meeks reported that in September, Lafayette and West Lafayette saw a 42.6% increase in home sales with 164 closings versus 115 last year, noting that rising listings let buyers shop without hurry (mortgage rates stayed in the low 6's). He added that the steadiness in rates and a balanced market are shifting purchasing trends (rental rates have decreased as buyers gain more options).  WLFI

SPORTS NEWS

  • After an exhibition loss at Kentucky, Purdue basketball played Indianapolis at Mackey Arena on Oct. 29 to work on rebounding and defense — the team adjusted player minutes and brought in a top transfer to fix its flaws.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue football safety Smiley Bradford, known for his big smile—earned from his early days as a runner—has become a key player in the Boilermakers' defense, earning time in games against Minnesota and Northwestern. He now plays under coach Barry Odom and will help the team in future matches against Rutgers and others.  Journal & Courier
