COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food Finders Food Bank CEO Kier Crites Muller said the bank has not yet seen increased need but may welcome more visitors later this month if the government shutdown causes missed paychecks—community members will soon be able to contribute during the Drive Away Hunger fall food drive.  Star City News

  • This week, residents in West Lafayette may notice SK hynix workers collecting soil samples at a local site—surveying the area for planned construction projects.  Star City News

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new mural on Main Street near 7th Street in downtown Lafayette honors the city's history by featuring John F. Kennedy, Fredrick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln — it was painted by artist Zach Curtis after being commissioned by the General de Lafayette chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A dedication will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jason Newhouser of Rossville High School was named Indiana's Outstanding Speech and Debate Educator for the 2025-26 school year by the Indiana Schools' Speech and Debate Association — a recognition that now makes him eligible for a national award. He has spent 27 years coaching speech and debate and, since 2010, has taught dual credit speech courses.  WLFI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Stargazers in Lafayette may see up to 20 meteors per hour as the Orionid meteor shower peaks today before midnight until about 2 a.m.—NASA reports that the new moon may boost fireball brightness so viewers should seek dark areas away from city lights.  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A total of 100 rural and volunteer fire departments in 54 counties have received grants from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service) to buy training, radios and firefighting equipment.  WLFI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Indiana State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration are hosting a free, anonymous prescription drug take-back event in Lafayette and Putnamville on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — expired, unused and unnecessary prescription drugs along with vaping pens without batteries and vaping cartridges may be dropped off — to help reduce drug abuse and theft.  Star City News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local high school football fans in Lafayette are invited to vote for the Ivy Tech player's Week 9 performance — nominees include standout Avery Stadler from Southmont, who rushed for 300 yards and scored six touchdowns, along with players from Twin Lakes and Lafayette Jeff. Voters can send their picks to sports reporter Ethan Hanson by email, Instagram, or Twitter as teams head into the IHSAA playoffs.  Journal & Courier
  • The IHSAA high school football postseason starts Friday, Oct. 24 with sectional quarterfinal games scheduled statewide starting at 7:00 pm—matchups include regional pairings from Classes 1A to 5A, with Lafayette Central Catholic hosting Seeger.   • Purdue University is hosting a football homecoming weekend starting Friday with a Celebration of Victories and Heroes at 5 p.m. at Mackey Arena and a parade at 7:30 p.m. from Memorial Mall to France A. Córdova Recreational Sports Center. On Saturday, events include Boilermaker Boulevard from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Thrill on the Hill at 10:30 a.m., and the game against Rutgers at noon at Ross-Ade Stadium.  Star City News
  • Purdue football coaches are still deciding which quarterback will start for the Homecoming game on Oct 25 against Rutgers as injured Ryan Browne, who hurt his left shoulder at Northwestern, practiced on Monday while Malachi Singleton boosted the offense. Coach Barry Odom said Browne is the starter if healthy and offensive coordinator Josh Henson noted that Singleton’s strong running game is being considered for the contest — the Big Ten’s worst defense.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue football will face Michigan at 7 p.m. on November 1 under the lights in Ann Arbor—Big Ten Network will air the game as the third night contest this season.  Journal & Courier
  • Boilermaker senior guard Braden Smith was unanimously named to the AP preseason All-American team on Monday—he earned all 57 votes and averaged 15.8 points, 8.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds last season. Purdue will start its exhibition season on Friday at Rupp Arena against Kentucky before opening the regular season on November 4 at Mackey Arena.  WLFI
