- ➤ Lafayette Urban Ministries is asking for food donations, financial contributions, and more volunteers to help their food pantry at Saint John's Church meet rising community needs—recently, the pantry has grown from serving 37 shoppers in 2022 to over 100 shoppers at a time. The pantry operates Mondays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Star City News
- ➤ Zeigler Subaru of Lafayette will partner with the Humane Society to host a Pet Adoption Day Cookout on Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1600 S. Creasy Lane—while the event runs a month-long pet food drive aiming to collect 5k pounds of food and offers a 15% discount for donations. Star City News

- ➤ Indiana POWER Caucus is accepting applications for a scholarship program that offers a $1,000 award to a Hoosier woman returning to school through a nontraditional path. Eligible applicants must be 25 or older and enrolled or accepted to an Indiana college; applications must be submitted by (November 7). WLFI
- ➤ Woodland Elementary School is hosting its first Scholastic Book Fair this week where kids can browse books and teachers receive part of the proceeds for classroom supplies — organizers set morning and evening hours and the fair runs until Oct. 17. Star City News
- ➤ Purdue University biomedical engineering students built a new surgical grasper with sensors that give surgeons real-time feedback to help avoid tissue damage during minimally invasive operations and will compete for first prize at a national inventors competition in Washington—D.C. on Oct. 16. - ➤ Lafayette and West Lafayette have begun their loose-leaf collection service, requiring residents to place leaves in loose piles on the curb by 6 a.m. Regular pick-up runs through April 1 in Lafayette and until Dec. 17 in West Lafayette—with walnut tree leaves to be bagged separately in Lafayette. - ➤ Frontier defensive coach Maurice Plains arrived two hours early on Friday, Oct.10 to lead both his team’s defense and the band—using his trumpet and conducting skills—to help force three fumbles against West Central and move the team to an 8-0 record. His many roles keep the school thriving both on the field and in the classroom. Journal & Courier
- ➤ Purdue will host its 14th annual Boilermaker Half-Marathon and 5k event this Saturday outside Ross Ade—nearly 5,000 runners will compete to support the Purdue Athlete's Life Success Program while registration remains available online. Star City News
- ➤ This Saturday, Purdue Basketball Fan Day is held at Mackey Arena where fans can watch team practices and get autographs (available one hour before each practice). The women's team scrimmage starts at 10 a.m. while the preseason number one men's team scrimmage begins at 11:45 a.m. (the event is free). Star City News
- ➤ Purdue football is 2-4 overall and 0-3 in Big Ten play as penalties, turnovers, and mental errors hold back consistent performance — the defense improved on Saturday with 12 pass breakups but the team still has not found its identity. Journal & Courier
