COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lafayette veteran Rocky Rockhill turned 100 Monday at Shellie's Café when community leaders like Mayor Tony Roswarski and State Rep. Sheila Klinker presented him with plaques and pins—his family and guests gathered to honor his service.  WLFI
  • Menards is inviting Lafayette shoppers to donate non-perishable food items for a local pantry—shoppers drop off items near the exit doors—as the food drive runs from Oct. 1 until Oct. 31.  Journal & Courier
  • Lafayette Parks and Recreation will host a free Hocus Pocus movie night on Friday at Loeb Stadium with gates opening at 5 p.m. and the movie starting at 6 p.m. (Visitors must watch from the field as lawn chairs, food, and drinks are not allowed.)  Star City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Community members gathered at a West Lafayette city council meeting on Oct. 6 to protest the SK Hynix semiconductor project after its zoning shifted from industrial to residential areas near homes+parks+daycares and elder facilities. Local officials continue to review the concerns raised by the change in zoning.  WLFI
  • The City of Lafayette recently asked residents via a survey for ideas to make the community more friendly for older people. Briton Weise from Tippecanoe Senior Services said the survey will help plan better services—like medical care, housing, and transportation—to support seniors aging in place.  Star City News
  • Despite the government shutdown that began Oct. 1, Purdue University Airport has not delayed its flights — Purdue spokesman Trevor Peters said there are no issues with commercial or student arrivals and departures. The airport continues scheduled flights to Chicago from Southern Airways and United Express operated by SkyWest.  Journal & Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lafayette’s Public Safety Center lit its lights pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month as Chief Galloway and city officials joined to support survivors and early detection; later, the lights will change to purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Star City News
  • Franciscan Health Lafayette’s Dr. Madelyn Lefranc urged local women to get yearly mammograms from age 40 and to perform regular self exams to help catch breast cancer early, noting that most follow-up procedures are negative. Chief Technologist Sueleen Bailey explained that the imaging process compresses the breast—similar to a CAT scan—and is designed to keep patients comfortable during the exam.  WLFI

SPORTS NEWS

  • Purdue basketball senior point guard Braden Smith was named preseason Player of the Year by USA TODAY Network media as Purdue was chosen as Big Ten champion by nearly all voters—his teammate Trey Kaufman-Renn also made the unanimous first-team; the Boilermakers will build on last season's strong play in the upcoming season.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue women's basketball, led by coach Katie Gearlds, is entering a new season with 10 new faces after a 10-19 record last year—players chosen for their athleticism, length, and shooting ability are expected to bring a fresh identity to the team. Coach Gearlds and her staff rebuilt the roster after several players transferred or retired, and the team now shows a strong determination to win.  Journal & Courier
