Good morning, Lafayette. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 8th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today in Lafayette, the Fire Department is hosting its 27th annual fire prevention shows for kindergarten through second graders at Sunnyside Intermediate School to teach fire safety lessons such as stop drop and roll, dialing 911, and planning escape routes—over 3000 students will see live firefighter performances and a free public show at 6 p.m. with lessons on hazards like retention ponds included in the program.  Star City News
  • Rocky Rockhill, a 100-year-old World War II veteran, was surprised at Shellie's Cafe when his family and the community gathered to honor his milestone birthday. Mayor Tony Roswarski and State Representative Sheila Klinker presented him with an award—recognizing his service and inspiring legacy.  Star City News

CULTURE NEWS

  • This Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the Lafayette Master Chorale will host its first season concert at Rhorman Performing Arts Center — a bicentennial celebration featuring the Purdue University Choir and Lafayette Jefferson High School Varsity Singers. Tickets will be available online for those planning to attend.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lafayette’s Ivy Tech School of Information Technology received a $25,000 grant from the Arconic Foundation to fund a project that lets students work with faculty on cybersecurity assessments and training + the grant will support student programs at the school.  Star City News
  • Last Friday, Burnett Creek Elementary students got a hands-on lesson when visitors from West Lafayette Street and Sanitation brought trucks for them to touch and learn how the city handles waste removal—providing a unique educational experience.  Star City News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Indiana is finalizing a new waste management plan to replace a decades-old strategy that will introduce enhanced recycling measures, food waste diversion, and a surcharge on landfilled materials. The plan, developed by IDEM and British contractor Eunomia, will be released by the end of 2025—guiding local governments and industry to boost the state’s waste recovery and economic future.  WLFI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lafayette Fire Department is proposing to fine for-profit nursing homes $500 for every non-emergency lift help call—calls that have stretched emergency resources in recent years. City council will review the proposal on Nov. 3 while some members worry the fine may be passed on to residents.  Journal & Courier
  • The Lafayette City Council approved stricter zoning rules that limit gas station development by setting new building and distance requirements and requiring decommissioning plans for gas stations, oil change businesses, and car washes. Existing projects are not affected, but legally non-conforming properties may face rebuilding challenges if damaged — West Lafayette postponed its vote while Tippecanoe County rejected the proposal.  Journal & Courier
  • CityBus suspended the free connector route 41 between Lafayette and West Lafayette because an operator shortage from retirements and a competitive market led to the decision. CEO Bryan Smith said new operator training starts soon — a class is graduating later this week — and the route will return next year if staffing improves.  Star City News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Purdue basketball has announced its 2025-26 season schedule with games set to air on Peacock, CBS, Fox, BTN, ESPN2, and CBS College Sports. The finalized schedule totals 17 network appearances—positioning Purdue as the national championship favorite.  Journal & Courier
