COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lori Gooding has raised cats at her rescue for over 10 years but her work changed after her stage four ovarian cancer diagnosis earlier this year—she received strong support from Outlaw Jeeps and is now in remission, two weeks from her last chemo, while caring for 71 cats.  WLFI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Scott Hanback, superintendent of Tippecanoe School Corporation, was named Indiana's Superintendent of the Year for 2026—he will represent the state in the national Superintendent of the Year competition sponsored by the School Superintendents Association. He has led the district since 2008 and has worked to expand academic and extracurricular programs.  WLFI
  • Purdue University will host the Hoosier Sheep Symposium on Sept. 20 at Creighton Hall of Animal Sciences—registration begins at 9 a.m. for $30, which includes breakfast and lunch—and sessions will cover topics from livestock systems to wool processing.  Star City News
  • Students started school last month and new research shows that Indiana teachers spent an average of $1,445 from their own pockets on classroom supplies—over $400 more than their peers in many other states. Parents also spent about $774 per child on back-to-school gear, adding to the overall burden of preparing for the academic year.  Journal & Courier

  • Luna, a Tippecanoe County Community Corrections K-9, returned to duty after surgery fixed a fractured bone caused by a condition that began in puppyhood—Tippecanoe County thanked Purdue University Veterinary Hospital for its care.  Star City News
  • Today, two westbound lanes on McCarty Lane from east of Park East Boulevard to Retail Way remain closed for roundabout construction — the closure will last 60 days and reopen on Nov. 15.  Star City News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Shelly Tansey from Franciscan Health stressed safe sleep practices during National Baby Safety Month, saying babies should sleep on their back in a crib with just a tight fitting sheet—no blankets, stuffed animals, or co-sleeping—to lower risks after ten deaths from unsafe sleep in August. A free car seat safety clinic is scheduled on September 27 to help parents switch from rear-facing infant seats to proper boosters when needed.  Star City News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Realtor.com data showed that homes in Tippecanoe County sold in June for a median price of $299,900—up 2% from May and 20% higher than last June—while recorded sales increased by 9.1% to 277, totaling $78.5 million.  Journal & Courier

SPORTS NEWS

  • Purdue’s defensive coordinator Mike Scherer said Notre Dame’s backfield and QB CJ Carr are known for quick moves that may challenge Purdue’s pass rush on third and fourth downs. He expects his team to adjust its tactics for the upcoming game.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue football has not forced a turnover in its first three games and is one of six FBS teams without a takeaway—coach Barry Odom said the team must improve its play in the red zone. Defensive coordinator Mike Scherer also noted the need to confuse the quarterback, and the Boilermakers hope to build on last season's struggles in upcoming games.  Journal & Courier
  • Lafayette area football players played strong games during week four last Friday. Readers can vote as often as they like until 11:59 p.m. ET Friday night — the vote will decide which of the 11 players made the biggest impact.  Journal & Courier
  • Benton Central setter Izzy Adams and Western Boone outside hitter Izzy Adams recalled the mix-up during tryouts three seasons ago — they have faced each other in state matchups over the past four years. Benton Central’s Adams tallied 1,035 assists while Western Boone’s Adams recorded 416 digs and won a state title last season, and both said the fierce rivalry motivates them for a possible rematch in sectionals.  Journal & Courier
