COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lafayette 3-year-old Imari Green is competing for the national Toddler of the Year contest—his family says his bright personality and love are already winning local support as he advances to the quarterfinals. Votes and donations through the contest website will help support Toys for Tots while he strives for a national ad campaign and a $25,000 prize.  WLFI
  • The Lafayette Fire Department is hosting the second annual 'On Fire for Our Fighters' 5K on Saturday, September 13th at 9 a.m. at LFD Station 5 on North Creasy Lane—registration closes Friday with an event shirt guaranteed for early sign-ups as proceeds support firefighter well-being.  Star City News
  • Dollar General has boosted Indiana food banks—supporting Food Finders Food Bank in Greater Lafayette—by donating during Hunger Action Month, and the retailer celebrated its fifth anniversary with a $1 million donation in July—while Feeding America has moved over 950,000 pounds of food to local banks this year.  WLFI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lafayette Renew earned a lab excellence award from the Indiana Water Environment Association at its annual conference—recognizing strong water testing practices and its commitment to public service in wastewater treatment.  Star City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • West Lafayette residents protested the city council’s rezoning decision for a semiconductor plant, saying that safety concerns and public comment were ignored in favor of corporate interests—calls that come amid an ongoing lawsuit and recent construction approvals. County officials approved the first step to level the plant’s site as the debate continues.  Journal & Courier
  • West Lafayette City Council approved a zoning request for a new student apartment complex called 'The Sullivan' that will have up to 551 bedrooms and 178 below-ground parking spots—despite residents' concerns over parking and safety issues around the planned semiconductor plant. The council also passed the first reading of the 2026 budget with a 3% raise for all city employees, accepted a $27,000 settlement from Purdue Pharma for opioid crisis programs, and approved a towing ordinance allowing after-hours vehicle pickups.  Journal & Courier

SPORTS NEWS

  • Purdue head coach Barry Odom is preparing his team to face Southern Illinois Saturday night at Ross-Ade Stadium—if his team wins, he will be the first coach since Cleo O'Donnell in 1916 to start 2-0. Purdue's 31—0 win over Ball State featured quarterback Ryan Browne's career-high 311 passing yards and a defense that held the opposition scoreless, though they must improve their running game against the FCS opponent.  Journal & Courier
