COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbian Park Zoo is now accepting registration for its Sept. 20 drop-off program—a fun event that offers games, crafts and animal encounters for children ages 5 to 12. Parents can sign up now to secure a spot at this exciting Kids’ Night Out.  Star City News
  • Lafayette’s Rat Pak venue is partnering with The Fox’s Den to host a drag bingo event next Friday to raise funds for local 4-year-old Brixley, who was diagnosed with leukemia in June—combo tickets cost $30 and include ten bingo games and a drag show.  WLFI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local business owners have shifted the long-running Starry Night Music and Arts Festival to downtown Lafayette with a new name, Star City Nights, after rising costs ended its run at Chauncey Hill. The festival will take place on Friday, Sept. 26 from 6 p.m. to midnight — free bus rides from Purdue's campus will help bring visitors downtown.  Journal & Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Purdue Student Union Board is asking the Greater Lafayette community to donate a fir for the December Christmas tree lighting—board members will review photos and visit sites to ensure the tree meets height, width and safety requirements before students decorate it for an event that draws over a thousand people.  Star City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tippecanoe County released a 25-year thoroughfare plan draft today that explains urban development, road classification and multi-modal transportation while inviting residents to review design standards and walking safety issues (feedback is welcome via phone or email).  Star City News
  • The United States Postal Service will hold job fairs on Friday, August 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at several local sites to help job seekers apply for rural carrier and assistant rural carrier positions.  WLFI
  • The Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commission will vote on a proposal for a six‐story apartment building near Purdue campus. The project includes 285 apartment units and commercial space—expected to offer more than 500 beds and attract local businesses.  Star City News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Indiana Department of Health reported over ten infant deaths this month linked to unsafe sleep conditions in Tippecanoe County and urged parents to follow the ABCs (Alone on their Back in a Crib) guidelines while offering free sleep safety education and supplies through local resources.  Star City News

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a season with few catches and losing key players, Purdue football now has a new group of receivers—many of whom are transfers—that hopes to boost the offense. Coaches plan to work with these players to improve catches and yards in upcoming games.  Journal & Courier
  • Faith Christian freshman Caleb Ungaro made his varsity soccer debut while wearing his late brother Cole's #19 jersey—marking a heartfelt tribute seven years after Cole died. He played 26 minutes in goal at Rohrman Stadium as his team won against DeMotte Christian.  Journal & Courier
