BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mikel Berger, a Purdue graduate and West Lafayette resident, will take over as president and CEO of Greater Lafayette Commerce on August 18th—he replaces former president Scott Walker after a monthslong search process.  Journal & Courier
  • French Knot, a Lafayette small business that designs knit patterns for sweaters and hats, is preparing for rising production costs as tariffs on imported goods take effect with the upcoming trade deadline + the company said these higher tariffs, especially on items from Madagascar, could force it to discontinue some products and reduce profits. It plans to adjust its operations as it works to support fair trade artisans overseas.  Star City News

  • SkyWest will begin service at Purdue University Airport on Aug. 5 from the new Amelia Earhart terminal, replacing Southern Airlines with a 50—passenger jet that doubles capacity and may lower one-way fares to between $90 and $115 on flights to Chicago.  Journal & Courier

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Experts at Purdue University said that mosquito antennae pick up tiny sounds in noisy settings—researchers hope this discovery will lead to new tools to detect earthquakes and tsunamis in the future.  WLFI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The West Lafayette Fire Department is expanding its force and safety center to match the city's growth and rising number of high-rise apartments. The department will hire 12 to 15 new firefighters, a fire inspector and a full-time training chief, with applications opening today—continuing into mid September.  Star City News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Franciscan Health Lafayette East was honored with the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain - MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2025 — an honor given to only 323 hospitals nationwide for outstanding heart attack care.  WLFI
  • Parkview Health announced it will build a $200 million hospital in Purdue Research Park with 40 inpatient beds and a 24/7 emergency room to meet the growing need for health care; construction will begin in 2026 and the facility is planned to open in 2028—adding a third new health option near campus after similar projects by IU Health and Ascension St. Vincent.  Journal & Courier

  • Charlie Woods, 16, stayed near the top with a -12 round at Ackerman-Allen Golf Course in West Lafayette during Round 3 of the Junior PGA Championship—he will tee off at 10:06 a.m. tomorrow alongside leader Lunden Esterline at -19 and Pennson Badget at -12 as fans watched his steady play.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue coach Barry Odom said the Boilermakers made incremental progress during preseason camp practice that began Thursday—he noted the team will use every minute to improve.  Journal & Courier
