COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two Lafayette firefighters, Sgt. David Rose and Lt. Ben Shultz, returned home after a three‐week mission in Texas where each walked over 100 miles to help Kerr County flood victims.  Star City News
  • The Greater Lafayette Family Shelter is holding a Christmas in July online fundraiser until August 1 to collect donations that will support emergency housing, meals, and other services for families in crisis in Tippecanoe County. Executive director Steven Flowers said donations are usually down at this time of year—each gift is vital to keeping the shelter’s operations running.  Journal & Courier

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Panera Bread is permanently closing its fresh dough production facilities over the next two years as it shifts to an on-demand baked goods model—72 employees will lose their jobs at a Missouri location by Sept. 12. The closures do not affect Indiana since the chain has no production facility here—its 45 local cafes will continue to receive par-baked dough from third-party contractors.  Journal & Courier

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Purdue star Zach Edey (Memphis Grizzlies center) pleaded guilty to speeding on May 1 in Indiana when he was clocked at 101 mph in a 55-mph zone and will pay $639.50 in fines and court costs after the reckless driving charge was dropped.  Journal & Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Haan Museum celebrated Lafayette’s bicentennial with a Lunch and Learn event that featured an exhibit on 200 years of local art and culture and a talk by guest speaker Angie Klink. Museum director Kerrie Bellisario showcased early works such as a painting of Native American encampments by George Winter—highlighting the long-held contributions of women artists.  Star City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The West Lafayette Fire Department will hire 12 to 15 new firefighters. The department will accept applications from August 1 to September 15 for candidates who value loyalty, integrity, and courage — opening new opportunities in public safety.  WLFI
  • New parking meters are now operating on downtown streets in West Lafayette as part of ParkMobile Phase Two. City officials say the meter revenue+will fund street and sidewalk improvements.  Star City News

SPORTS NEWS

  • 16-year-old Charlie Woods, son of Tiger Woods, played in the Junior PGA Championship at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex today and drew over 200 fans, recording a 1-under par 70 in challenging conditions—he will tee off again at 7:41 a.m. from Kampen-Cosler Course. This event brings international competition to our local course and continues to boost interest in junior golf.  Journal & Courier
