COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Greater Lafayette Commerce is recruiting Lafayette families to host 12 middle and high school students from Ota, Japan as part of a cultural exchange program from August 5 to 14. Families are invited to offer housing and support community events for the visiting students.  Star City News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Jake's Roadhouse, a long-time bar and restaurant + located off Third Street in downtown Lafayette, closed in 2018 and is set to reopen later this year + though no official date has been announced.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Purdue University has signed a memorandum with Los Alamos National Laboratory to research new defense and security technologies. The agreement, which runs through 2030, also sets the stage for a future plan to establish a Los Alamos duty station near Purdue—an effort to boost research collaboration in advanced materials, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and energetics.  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials and community members gathered on Wabash Avenue Wednesday morning to cut the ribbon on Lafayette's new solar field at the Renew Wastewater Treatment Plant—an effort that will cut energy costs and lower carbon emissions. Mayor Tony Roswarski said the investment will drive future clean energy projects and support the city's long-term sustainability goals.  WLFI
  • Today, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the new West Lafayette Public Safety Center which will house the police department and Fire Station 2 next to the current police station. The center is set to complete in 2028 and will include new training facilities and a historic 108 year old fire pole—features designed to improve teamwork and community service.  Star City News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Purdue men’s basketball alumni team Men of Mackey will not play in this year’s $1 million tournament—general manager Ryan Kay said a drop in committed Purdue alums and overseas contract issues made it hard to put together a full team. The team will regroup and aims to compete in future tournaments to rebuild its Boilermaker identity.  Journal & Courier
