COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Lafayette Parks Foundation will build a new pickleball complex at McCaw Park with a $75,000 grant from IU Health. The complex is part of Phase Two improvements + following Phase One upgrades that added a dog park, bathrooms, and extra parking + and will give local residents more places to play. WLFI
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Lafayette police released June statistics showing that burglaries, thefts, and shootings decreased while 911 calls, robberies, and mental health+animal control calls increased, and overall as well as DUI arrests and firearm seizures fell. WLFI
- ➤ Julius Powell, 25, of Lafayette was found hanging from a Motel 6 balcony on July 1 and his death was preliminarily ruled a suicide by Tippecanoe County coroner—final results will come after toxicology tests. Journal & Courier
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lafayette students are getting ready for school with some dreading classes and others excited to learn. Parents face rising supply costs, and Indiana Representative Chris Campbell said a tax exemption program could ease the burden — many local parents like Trisha Henderson hope it will save money for families—. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lafayette Fire Department Sergeant Dave Rose has been sent to Texas to aid flood relief through Indiana Task Force One—he will search damaged structures for trapped individuals. Captain Ryan Thoma said the deployment will provide valuable rescue experience that the department will bring back to Lafayette. Star City News
- ➤ Rural West Lafayette property owners in parts of Wabash and Tippecanoe townships have until Aug. 11 to opt into AA zoning (Select Agricultural) that preserves farmland and limits nonag uses, and the county will cover the ($500) fee; opting in does not stop future rezoning by current or later owners. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Franciscan Health donated 32 AEDs to nonprofit organizations today during its Revive and Survive breakfast event — a program it has run since 2006. The health system provided free training on using the devices to help treat sudden cardiac arrest. Star City News
- ➤ Franciscan Health Lafayette donated 32 AEDs to 23 local nonprofits during its Revive & Survive Breakfast Thursday morning—organizations like the Lafayette Parks Department and First United Methodist Church will use the devices to help save lives in emergencies. Nearly 600 AEDs have been given out since the program began in 2005 to boost survival rates. WLFI
