- ➤ The West Lafayette Public Library Foundation is celebrating its 30th birthday this year and will host a birthday party (Sunday, July 13) at the library from 2 to 4 p.m. (The event will include cake and a short program) to mark the milestone. WLFI
- ➤ Lafayette Urban Ministry is running a cooling station today where people can cool off + get cold water, fresh meals, and a shelter for overnight stays during this heatwave. The ministry relies on donations + community support to keep these services available. WLFI
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Lafayette will mark its bicentennial on July 1 with the Bicentennial Birthday Bash at Columbian Park from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.—attendees will enjoy live music by Audrey Johnson, historic walking tours led by Tippecanoe County Historical Association, local artist booths, a free children's activity, and food trucks. - ➤ Local festivals and community events are scheduled from June 27 through September in Lafayette, starting with the Indiana Fiddlers’ Gathering at Tippecanoe Battlefield, the Short Playfest at the Civic Theater, and Summer on the Square today featuring local vendors downtown. Additional events include a baseball double-header on July 2, Art in the Park on July 1, Stars and Stripes on July 4, and cultural festivals in West Lafayette and Lafayette — promising a busy summer for residents. - ➤ The Indiana Fiddlers Gathering is underway in Lafayette as it celebrates 73 years of folk and bluegrass music—drawing performers and guests from around the globe. The festival began on the 27th and will run through the 29th with free children’s concerts, workshops, food, performances, and jam sessions. Star City News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fireworks are legal from June 29 to July 9, with displays allowed from 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset and extended hours on July 4 from 10 a.m. until midnight—Lafayette police urge residents to be mindful of neighbors, pets and those with PTSD while warning that large displays are best left to professionals to avoid injuries and fines. - ➤ Drivers should expect delays on County Road 625 East over State Road 25 near Buck Creek starting Monday, July 7 as a bridge deck overlay project closes the road and detour signs guide traffic. Work will continue until early August + the schedule may change with the weather. WLFI
- ➤ INDOT will close the right westbound lane on U.S. 52/231 in West Lafayette starting on June 30 for testing of a Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer pilot project—crews will work Monday through Friday during daytime hours with a 45 mph speed limit enforced and testing expected to continue through August. WLFI
- ➤ Local first responders braved the heat today at Lafayette Fire Training Grounds during a hazmat training session — the Lafayette Fire Department led drills with support from CityBus, which donated a vehicle, as participants used special suits and cooling stations for safety. Assistant Chief Cody Roby guided the exercises as part of the multi-agency training. WLFI
