BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hooters closed its Lafayette restaurant June 4 as part of a Chapter 11 restructuring that shuttered 30 company-owned locations nationwide — the chain plans to shift to a franchise-only model to reduce its debt.  Star City News

CRIME NEWS

  • Lars Costello (a convicted felon) was found disoriented on North 13th Street on June 4 after a reaction to synthetic marijuana and now faces new charges when officers discovered a handgun during his medical evaluation as the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor's Office reviews his case.  WLFI
  • The Lafayette Police Department released body cam footage from May 1 showing a domestic dispute call at 2800 Ravenwood Court that escalated when Kenneth Smith — who had been drinking and was armed — fired three gunshots before officers shot him in self-defense, leaving Ernestine Black and her son unharmed.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Purdue University is facing cuts to some degree programs as a new state law requires programs to meet a minimum enrollment, and students like Juan and Agustin worry about their future courses. The university must get approval from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education to keep programs below the required numbers—this comes amid other budget challenges affecting DEI programs and international tuition.  Star City News
  • The Indiana Kids Count Book shows that Indiana children are doing better with the overall ranking rising to 25th from 27th, and education now at 11th nationally—improving from 17th. President and CEO Dr. Tami Silverman said investments in children and families are driving these gains.  WLFI

  • Eggs from August Egg Company with plant codes P-6562 or CA5330 were recalled on June 6 after a salmonella outbreak led to 79 hospitalizations across nine states—if you bought these eggs, throw them away or return them and wash any surfaces they touched.  Journal & Courier

  • Purdue basketball began its eight-week summer practice Monday with a limited session on Cardinal Court as new players like Oscar Cluff awaited visa clearance, freshman guard Omer Mayer remained overseas, and incoming transfer Liam Murphy practiced sparingly due to shoulder surgery—Coach Painter said the team will take time to adjust while returning players like Daniel Jacobsen and Antione West Jr. work on their roles.  Journal & Courier
