Good morning, Lafayette. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 8th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A flood warning is in effect until late this afternoon at Lafayette as two to four inches of rain cause minor flooding along the Wabash River, and more rain of up to an inch is expected through today. The 46th annual Farm Toy Show at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds is underway with 100 vendors and over 400 tables, Farm at Prophetstown is hosting five-course Farm to Table dinners, Purdue research shows rising farmland prices & tar spot issues are affecting corn fields, and Wea Creek Orchard is growing a new lavender field & bake shop.  WLFI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Purdue University stopped helping distribute The Purdue Exponent on campus because an expired facilities contract ended that support. Critics say the move limits student access to news—students are now working on a new plan to keep the paper in circulation.  Journal & Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • A California company is recalling 1,700,000 dozen brown eggs distributed since Feb. 3 because they may be contaminated with salmonella—Walmart stores in Indiana and other retailers in nine states may have received the eggs. Consumers should check the plant code on their cartons and return the eggs for a refund if they have them.  Journal & Courier

SPORTS NEWS

  • North Newton softball earned its first IHSAA state final after beating Southwood 7-0 on June 7 with six home runs and a complete game by pitcher Sydney Rainford — the team had previously defeated Riverton Parke 5-0 and was welcomed home with a fire truck escort, and they will face either Indianapolis Lutheran or Clay City at Bittinger Stadium on June 9.  Journal & Courier
  • Central Catholic lost 2-1 to Oak Hill in the IHSAA class 2A regional final in Converse. Senior pitcher Lucas Gerkey allowed one earned run on eight hits (with three strikeouts) and will enroll at IU Kokomo to study physical therapy (marking the end of his high school baseball career).  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue’s equestrian team, based in a barn in Brookston 20 miles from campus, won the IHSA national championship hunter seat team title last month after winning 10 regular season shows and a zone competition that narrowed the field from 400 teams. Head coach Kathryn Kraft, who set a goal of a top-five finish, led the 50-member team to earn two individual national champions and seven top-five ribbons — a win that marks the program’s most notable achievement since 1993.  Journal & Courier
