  • YWCA Greater Lafayette will host the 'Power of the Community' event on June 6 from 5-8 p.m. at the Patricia and W. Kelley Carr Advocacy Center backyard and parking lot to honor women battling cancer, support victims of violence and celebrate survivors.   • Imagination Station in Lafayette is hosting Disaster and Emergency Preparedness Day on May 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—a free event that will feature weather balloon launches, live tornado tracking, emergency vehicles, indoor safety demos and free rides on The Pedal Power at 600 N.   • A mother said a 9-year-old Earhart Elementary student was sent home alone on May 15 without notification that he should stay home for a field trip+he was found safe later that day, and she calls for immediate review of school crossing procedures amid an ongoing investigation.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue researchers captured tree frogs during a mating dance on logs in nearby wetlands to study their breeding habits + they worked in dark, wet grass to track frog pairings.  Journal & Courier
  • Students seeking summer jobs can apply for vacancies in retail, grocery, and restaurants as downtown businesses note that reduced foot traffic limits staffing needs while still hiring seasonally.   • Lafayette’s GreenFest 2026 runs on June 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Big Four Depot & Riehle Plaza and will feature interactive exhibits and hands-on activities focused on recycling, waste reduction and clean energy for all ages.  Star City News
  • Purdue researchers tracked mating gray tree frogs at the ACRE Wetland on May 17 + they later examined eggs and tadpoles at the Wildlife Ecology Research Facility to assess the impact of forever chemicals on offspring.  Journal & Courier

  • Nightly lane closures occur on I-65 between Indiana 28 and Indiana 38 from 8 p.m. to 10 a.m., INDOT said that workers will resurface and patch pavement through summer until September (weather permitting).  Journal & Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • With warmer temperatures increasing storm risk, safety officials advise Lafayette residents to charge devices and seek shelter in a basement or windowless room when lightning appears. They recommend avoiding open flames for light and caution drivers to steer clear of moving water as power lines may be down.  Star City News

  • Harrison's girls tennis team repeated as regional champions on Wednesday, May 27 after a coaching change reunited a winning doubles pair to secure a 4-1 win over Eastern, and the Raiders will face eighth-ranked Munster at Culver Academies Semistate on Saturday.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue football will start its 2026 season on Friday, Sept. 4, with a 7 p.m. kickoff against Indiana State on BTN. The schedule also features a noon game against Wake Forest on Sept. 12 and an 11 p.m. contest at the Rose Bowl against UCLA on Sept. 19.  Journal & Courier
