CRIME NEWS

  • Beth Ann Whitehead, 66, of Lafayette, was charged with felony arson and intimidation after she set curtains on fire and threatened a home’s occupants at Rochelle Drive on May 20—witnesses said the homeowner and caregiver intervened to stop further fires.  Star City News
  • Two Kokomo residents pleaded guilty in the fatal New Year's Day shooting of 18-year-old Anthony Holdbrook and were sentenced to 14 years in prison, three years in community corrections and two and a half years probation by Tippecanoe County prosecutors.  WLFI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Arni’s Pizza, a Lafayette favorite since 1965 with 17 locations, will return to TASTE of Tippecanoe on Saturday, June 21 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Owner Bradley Cohen said the event will offer classic pizzas and maintain a focus on quality and hometown pride—tradition that continues to draw loyal locals.  WLFI

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study by California-based company S-Line Contractors found Lafayette-West Lafayette is the fastest growing metro area in the U.S. — a result based on building permits — as the area filed 630 new housing permits per 100,000 people between January and February. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis — which showed our area filed 201 more permits than Carson City’s 429 — ranked Bloomington 18th among the top 30 areas.  Journal & Courier

  • The Lafayette Police Department welcomed four new police officers and honored members for exceptional service at a recent ceremony — recognizing retiring officers and those noted for life-saving actions — to reinforce its commitment to public safety.   • Memorial Day is on Monday, May 26 and the USPS will be closed so no mail will be delivered while FedEx and UPS will offer only limited services. Banks and the stock markets will also be closed—leading to fewer financial activities during the holiday.  Journal & Courier

  • Maddi Nevitt from Tri-County and Kieraan Jordan from McCutcheon were named as this week’s Journal & Courier Athletes of the Week after votes between May 12 and May 18—Jordan led his volleyball team to its first area sectional title game with 21 assists while Nevitt tossed a five-inning perfect game with 11 strikeouts.  Journal & Courier
