COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The West Lafayette Police Department will host a furniture drive with partners from Lafayette PD, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office and Valley Oaks Health on May 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church (1700 Mitchel Daniels Blvd).  Star City News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lafayette artist Joshua Eli Steineker will have his linocut piece (Circus Shadows) displayed at the International Circus Hall of Fame starting June 1 in honor of the museum’s summer reopening. Buckingham Palace recognition adds extra honor to his work.  WLFI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kindergarteners participated in their 8th annual Kindy 500 at Mayflower Mill Elementary, a race event that teaches Indiana racing traditions. Students formed teams, picked names and numbers, and painted their own cars (celebrating Indy 500 customs like chugging milk and kissing bricks).  Star City News
  • Teacher Jason Newhouser at Rossville Middle/Senior High School was honored with the Ivy Tech Lafayette Campus President’s Dual Credit Award on May 14 (recognizing his role in expanding college course access for students). He is now eligible for the statewide honor that celebrates excellence in dual credit instruction.  Journal & Courier
  • Phil Shabi was named the new assistant principal at Harrison High School. He will oversee teacher evaluations, daily operations, and student clubs — drawing on his 25 years of education experience, including his previous role as principal at Fountain Central Junior/Senior High School.  Star City News
  • Andrea Blocher, an eighth grade science teacher at Tecumseh Junior High, was named LSC Distinguished Educator for engaging students in learning and nurturing a supportive classroom. She has taught for 31 years and boosts school spirit (with daily trivia sessions) to help students connect.  Star City News
  • Lafayette schools hosted career events last week at Murdock Elementary and St. Boniface/St. Mary Cathedral Schools, where students engaged with exhibitors from local services and learned about various career paths — a move supported by Mayor Roswarski.  Star City News
  • Today, Purdue began its spring commencement with over 10,000 graduates (the largest class to date) set to receive diplomas over nine ceremonies at Elliott Hall of Music.  WLFI
  • According to Chipotle, Purdue students ordered more Chipotle meals than any other college community in America. West Lafayette’s two Chipotle locations led the national ranking, placing the city at the top for burritos and bowls.  WLFI

  • Amie Anthrop returns as head coach of Harrison girls basketball pending Tippecanoe School Corp board approval after Rush McColley stepped down (she coached the Raiders from 2016 to 2018 and worked with Purdue’s softball program).  Journal & Courier
  • Sports 18 released episode six of Dugout Dingers featuring Purdue softball senior Haley Painter, who discussed her journey from California and her ambitions at Purdue. The series spotlights current Purdue Baseball and Softball players.  WLFI
