COMMUNITY NEWS

  • West Lafayette Police Department will host a radKids Summer Camp for children ages 5 to 12 from June 15 to June 19 that teaches personal safety and confidence; registration opens Friday, May 15 (via West Lafayette Parks and Recreation website).  WLFI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bluewater Kings Band will open Columbian Park’s Sounds of Summer concert series with a free performance on Saturday, May 23 (2-5 p.m.) at Memorial Island Amphitheater. Fans can bring lawn chairs and blankets to relax and enjoy a mix of Motown, pop, rock, funk, soul and dance favorites.  Star City News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • High gas and airfare prices push locals to plan shorter summer trips + choose regional drives instead of long flights; travel agents report more families will visit for Purdue tours, and Visit Lafayette expects an uptick in drive-in tourists.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Lafayette holds sessions on June 17 and Sept. 2 at Margerum City Hall to gather input for a planned Early Childhood Education Center in the northern area—targeting local child-care needs. Community members will discuss design ideas, outdoor spaces and drop-off access to shape the center.  Journal & Courier
  • Gov. Mike Braun signed a bill that restricts cell phone use in schools from bell to bell to help students focus and support teachers. The new law allows exceptions for emergencies, individualized education programs, and medical needs.  WLFI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Purdue University expert advises homeowners to keep grass at 2.5 to 3.5 inches and swap mower blades monthly + feed lawns three times a year to avoid overfeeding while robotic mowers work daily like small grazing animals.  WLFI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • INDOT will close the Indiana 32 bridge over Prairie Creek for repairs starting May 15; drivers will use an official detour via Indiana 63, I-74, and U.S. 41, and work is expected to finish on June 5 (weather may affect timing).  Journal & Courier

  • Purdue basketball player Trey Kaufman-Renn shined at the G-League Combine + earned an invite to the NBA Draft Combine, boosting his professional path.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue's Braden Smith impressed scouts at the NBA Draft Combine on Wednesday, May 13 by showcasing his elite passing skills and quick moves despite his 5-foot-10 frame. The former point guard ranked among top performers in key drills and is seen as a promising draft prospect.  Journal & Courier
