  • The Sonya L. Margerum Fountain at Tapawingo Park has turned green for Mental Health Awareness Month. West Lafayette Parks and Recreation hopes to boost mental health support and reduce stigma — a move that invites community engagement.  Star City News

  • Local businesses are gearing up for Mother’s Day with busy flower shops and nearly full restaurants in Lafayette; 21 Petals reports triple sales on peak days (with higher gas costs affecting deliveries) as restaurants prepare special menus to honor moms.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Andrea Blocher, a veteran 8th-grade science teacher at Tecumseh Junior High, was named Lafayette School Corp.’s District Distinguished Educator for 2026 at Greater Lafayette Career Academy on May 8. She is honored for her warmth in teaching and her work coaching track and cross country.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue University and Cook Medical signed a partnership to boost precision medicine with AI and computational research at Purdue. Officials said the collaboration builds on 50 years of teamwork (which has helped more than 100 million patients) and aims to strengthen biomedical innovation.  Star City News
  • Purdue professor Zubin Jacob earned the 2026 Guggenheim fellowship for his work on thermal imaging and astrophysics. He advanced methods to capture details in microscopes and telescopes (making him one of only three engineering winners in this prestigious class).  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The West Lafayette Street and Sanitation Department announced a new trash, recycling and yard waste collection schedule starting in June following the transfer station relocation. Affected residents will receive updated collection days plus route maps by mail and door-to-door canvassing.  WLFI
  • Mayor Roswarski signed a proclamation declaring May as ALS Awareness Month to boost community support and research on ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). The initiative highlights the disease's challenges and encourages local residents to join the effort.  Star City News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Coach Kate Reiff of Twin Lakes softened her intense style and helped the softball team win 9 of their last 13 games, including a 2-1 victory over West Lafayette on Tuesday. The team now plays with more unity (with leaders from every grade) to advance in sectionals.  Journal & Courier
  • Former Purdue football coach Ryan Walters, now Washington’s defensive coordinator, will return under the lights at Ross-Ade Stadium when Purdue hosts Washington at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16.  Journal & Courier
