ECONOMY NEWS

  • Indiana lawmakers passed Senate Bill 1 in the 2025 session, offering modest property tax cuts to homeowners and significant tax cuts to businesses; however, the measure is expected to raise income taxes and drive job losses as automation increases—while missing a chance to lower high hospital costs.  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Indiana lawmakers rejected bills to legalize or decriminalize marijuana during the session and cut millions in funding for programs like public broadcasting because of a revenue shortfall from tariffs—while neighboring states like Illinois and Michigan earned hundreds of millions from cannabis sales.  Journal & Courier
  • West Lafayette City Council voted 6+3 to deny a rezoning proposal for a $4 billion SK hynix microchip plant after more than 400 residents objected during a seven-hour meeting. The decision sends the project back to its original site and will require SK hynix to revisit its plans.  Journal & Courier
  • Lafayette City Council approved a $250K forgivable loan to help developer John Teibel move utility lines and remove Duke Energy poles for his $11 million, 36-unit townhome project in the Centennial Neighborhood—this funding covers needed work on utilities. A public hearing to finalize the ordinance for closing part of the alley is set for June 2 at 6:01 p.m.—officials say the step supports a careful plan to revitalize the area.  Journal & Courier
  • West Lafayette City Council approved rezoning for a near-$4 billion sk Hynix computer chip plant that will be built closer to homes north of Purdue University’s campus — a move that comes after heated public debate over safety and transparency. The 6—3 vote followed lengthy public comments and reflects strong local concern over shifting the project from its original site to a residential area now zoned as heavy industrial.  Journal & Courier
  • After more than six hours of public comment on Monday night, West Lafayette City Council voted 6 yeas to 3 nays to rezone 100 acres from low-density homes to heavy industrial for SK Hynix’s planned $4B microchip plant — residents raised concerns about air, water and public health. City officials said the new site, found during the CHIPS Act process, is needed to secure funding and keep the project within the Purdue Research Park area.  Star City News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Boys volleyball is growing fast as IHSAA takes charge—statewide teams have jumped from 35 in 2022 to 133 now with the first state title set for 2025.
