COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rep. Chris Campbell will give away free tree seedlings at the West Lafayette Farmers Market, which opens next Wednesday from 3:30-6:30 p.m. at Cumberland Park; tulip tree and choke-cherry shrub seedlings are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Star City News
  • Lafayette Farmers Market returns May 2 with 120 vendors offering produce, prepared foods, artisan goods and music. Running every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Fifth Street between Columbia and Ferry streets + Main Street between Fourth and Sixth, the 187th season attracts thousands of locals.  Journal & Courier
  • After Monday night's storm left more than 40,000 customers without power, Duke Energy crews and local first responders in Lafayette worked overnight to assess damage and restore service. They continue clearing debris + repairing lines to bring power back safely for affected neighborhoods.  WLFI
  • The Munger Park trail is closed until further notice for tree and landscape work, so visitors should use caution and plan to take alternate routes.  Star City News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Over the weekend, Tippecanoe County saw gas prices cross $4 per gallon, reaching an average of $4.16 in the metro—a $0.26 jump from last week. Governor Mike Braun announced a 30-day gas tax suspension as residents plan cost-saving adjustments.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tippecanoe School Corp. recognized Andrea Bornino of Klondike Elementary and Diane Beaudoin of Harrison High as its 2026 Teachers of the Year on Apr. 28. The two educators were chosen from 19 nominees and will represent the district in the Indiana Teacher of the Year program (state contest).  Journal & Courier
  • A new NEA report found that Indiana ranked 38th for teacher pay with an average salary of $61,661 during the 2024-25 school year, trailing neighboring states. Lawmakers' recent boosts raised entry-level salaries, but mid-career pay remained compressed, raising concerns over retention.  WLFI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tippecanoe County homeowners with septic systems can receive up to 75% financial help for repairs, pumping, or inspections when they apply with a Health Department-approved installer (low-income residents and those near streams are prioritized) to protect local waterways from nutrient pollution.  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • West Lafayette will close South Chauncey Avenue from May 1–9 for crane removal at Hub Chauncey, and Purdue campus extends a road closure through June 1. Roads near North Grant will close for Soap Box Derby practices on June 6 and 13, with makeup day on June 14 if needed.  Star City News
  • The Indiana Department of Education is surveying public K-12 schools on the use of artificial food dyes in meals after Gov. Braun’s directive last April. Schools are asked to report changes in additives for free and reduced-price meal programs.  WLFI

SPORTS NEWS

  • Purdue women’s basketball has signed guard Aysia Proctor for the 2026-27 season. Proctor—a top 3-point shooter at North Texas who averaged 14.1 points per game last season and earned American Second Team All-Conference honors—will boost the team's scoring in West Lafayette.  WLFI
