- ➤ Franciscan Health Foundation held a blessing for the new St Elizabeth Garden on April 20 in Lafayette; Bishop Timothy Doherty and health staff attended the ceremony at the former site of St Elizabeth School of Nursing, which now offers an outdoor space for study and reflection. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students in grades 4 to 8 will join the third annual STEAM camp at The Haan Museum from June 8 to 12 where they engage in hands-on learning from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the camp ends with an art showcase in the museum’s sculpture garden. Journal & Courier
- ➤ Jefferson High School's robotics team earned a spot at the FIRST World Championship in Houston by winning the State Engineering Inspiration Award at the State Championship over the weekend. The event will run from April 29 through May 2. WLFI
- ➤ A Purdue computer science professor dropped AI cheating allegations after a warning email caused over half his CS 240 students to unenroll yesterday. He held a class meeting in West Lafayette to discuss new guidelines for AI use in coursework. Journal & Courier
- ➤ The McCutcheon High School robotics team won the FIRST Indiana State Championship - the school’s first state title - and will head to Houston to defend its world championship starting April 29. Star City News
- ➤ Samuel McNamara, a Rossville third-grader, scored in the top 2% on ILEARN math tests and earned an invitation to apply for the National Math Stars program. Families must apply by June 15 and finalists will be named in July with final selections on Aug. 14. WLFI
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Tippecanoe County nonprofit Lafayette Tree Fund received a 9,000-dollar grant from Duke Energy Foundation as part of the America250 initiative to plant trees along city streets. Duke Energy employees will plant trees in the Pipers Glen neighborhood on May 2. WLFI
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Purdue women's basketball welcomes Hannah Wickstrom, the nation's fifth-leading scorer, as a junior, announced by head coach Katie Gearlds. The Melbourne-based star averaged 23.4 points per game for UC Riverside last season and is expected to boost the team's scoring going forward. WLFI
- ➤ Thirteen-year-old Lafayette resident Hudson Brunton nearly lost his finger last December but now makes and sells handmade bats from his backyard workshop on Instagram with his father’s help, turning a tough setback into a growing business. Journal & Courier
- ➤ The 15th annual evGrandPrix drew a new crowd and packed stands on Saturday, Apr. 18 at the Purdue Grand Prix Track when Jim Bullard served as grand marshal. The 50-lap battery-powered race featured teams from nine universities and local groups + rookie Zach Hochhauser won the race. Journal & Courier
- ➤ Purdue swept Ohio State in a three-game series Sunday at Alexander Field, with pitcher Austin Klug throwing six shutout innings to extend a Big Ten win streak to seven—marking the first sweep over Ohio State since 1987. The team will host Indiana State Tuesday at 6 p.m. WLFI
- ➤ Ivy Tech Community College has presented Journal and Courier Athlete of the Week nominees after a week of baseball, softball and track from April 13-18. Voting ends Friday at noon (winners will be announced Saturday morning). Journal & Courier
