Good morning, Lafayette. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 19th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the community will honor firefighter Sgt. John Robinson, who died on April 14 while on duty at Lafayette Fire Station 9, with a visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. and a service at 11:30 a.m. at Jefferson High School (1801 S. 18th St.) followed by a funeral procession past Fire Station 9 to IOOF Cemetery in Brookston.  Journal & Courier
  • House Family and Wabash Center will host the 10th annual Grant's House Celebration — marking a decade of service for children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities — on Friday, May 2 from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds; ticket prices are $10 for children under 12 and $25 or $54 for adult options.  WLFI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Members of St. Boniface Church re-enacted the final moments of Jesus in a two-hour Good Friday event called Via Crucis held outside the church, where community members and Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski observed the depiction. The event—presented entirely in Spanish—showed the trial, beatings and crucifixion to honor Christ's sacrifice.  Journal & Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, about 80 Purdue professors gathered on Memorial Mall in West Lafayette to protest planned education spending cuts and visa revocations that they said threaten higher education. Several speakers decried the administration's silence (which left many worried about support for international students and faculty) and called for clear action (to protect careers and educational opportunities).  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Indiana State Police urge motorists and farmers to share the road safely during spring planting as slow-moving farm equipment appears on rural and state roads, and drivers are told to plan extra travel time—farm equipment typically moves at less than 25 mph.  Star City News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Lyrid meteor shower will peak between April 21 and April 22 but clouds may reduce views in the eastern and north-central U.S.—Lafayette residents can still try dark locations to see 10 to 20 meteors per hour with the occasional fireball.  Journal & Courier

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mo Omonode from West Lafayette High School, who played 33 games over three seasons for Purdue—recording 32 tackles and 3.5 sacks and earning immediate playing time as a true freshman—is now entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer after a minor back injury at spring camp.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue football's former quarterback Ryan Browne returned to the team after his stint in North Carolina and recommitted to head coach Barry Odom’s staff. He now joins the competition for the starting quarterback role—joining other transfer players to strengthen the team.  Journal & Courier
