BUSINESS NEWS

  • Leo's Market and Eatery opened its latest Lafayette store at 3431 South Street with a Grand Opening Celebration in January — the event included a donation to the Boys and Girls Club and local vendors offering homemade products. Founded by siblings Stephanie and Keith White, the store honors their late father and brings a unique convenience concept to the community.  WLFI

CRIME NEWS

  • William D. Mantle, a 20-year-old man from Lafayette, was arrested on November 14 for burglary, theft, and criminal trespass after police found him living in a locked city-owned concession stand at CAT Park—he admitted to entering through an unlocked door and staying for several weeks while taking food and merchandise.  Star City News
  • A Lafayette woman, Ashley Nichole Gallien (29), was charged with 11 felony counts after a traffic stop on April 10 uncovered drug residue and paraphernalia linked to her alleged trips to Chicago for controlled substances, and she also faces a habitual offender designation from six prior felony convictions.  Star City News
  • April Denise Quesada, 45, was arrested on April 14th after Lafayette police found her hiding in a wooded area behind JR Towing during a vehicle fire and recovered drugs, paraphernalia, and a stolen handgun from her backpack—she admitted her boyfriend started the fire and now faces five charges including two felonies.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school students had a chance at the annual HireMe! job fair to interview with over 60 local employers, military recruiters — and colleges for career and college options. The event, which began three years ago with 20 employers, saw 677 students register and is expected to draw more than 450 attendees today.  Star City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Senator Ron Alting said on Wednesday that Senate Bill 197 made street camping illegal and jailable—officers can warn and require homeless individuals to move within 24 or 72 hours, with failure to comply resulting in a misdemeanor carrying up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. He vowed to fight criminalizing homelessness and said the Senate is expected to vote soon to remove this language.  Journal & Courier

  • Purdue basketball added forward Liam Murphy to its roster to complete key transfer moves as coach Matt Painter deepened the team for next season. Murphy joins center Oscar Cluff and Israeli point guard Omer Mayer as Purdue chases its first NCAA title.  Journal & Courier
