COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Lambert Fieldhouse in West Lafayette, people plunged in icy water on Saturday, Feb. 28 to fund Special Olympics and join a costume contest (accessible sprinklers allowed wheelchair users). The next plunge is set for tomorrow, Mar. 5 at Eagle Creek Beach in Indianapolis.  Journal & Courier

  • Trey Foster, a Tri-County senior and basketball player, has run his cookie business Trey’s Treats for two years, baking flavors like s'mores and red velvet that sell out by lunch. He balances school, sports, and business + plans to keep his venture going until graduation.  Journal & Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Purdue University in West Lafayette denied a formal ban on international grad students on Monday but faculty allege an unwritten policy is limiting offers to applicants from China and other countries. Purdue said all applications are reviewed fairly (even as international enrollment declines).  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lafayette Water Works is accepting Right of Entry forms (available online in English and Spanish) for lead service line inspection and replacement in Areas 4, 5, and 6. This program ensures drinking water meets EPA Lead and Copper Rule Revisions.  Star City News
  • West Lafayette will rename a stretch of Chauncey Avenue in front of City Hall — honoring former Judge Lori Stein Sabol — as Hon. Lori Stein Sabol Way, with a dedication ceremony set for March 22 at 2 p.m.  Star City News
  • Lafayette City Council approved rezoning for a $10.2M Right Steps center yesterday on the north end. It will be built on the former Hanna and Burton sites with a hearing on vacating Hanna Street set for April 6 at 6 p.m. (one councilman abstained over local history concerns).  Journal & Courier
  • Tippecanoe County invites the public to review and comment on its solar ordinance today at 4:45 p.m. at 20 N. 3rd Street in the Tippecanoe Room; those unable to attend in person can watch the live stream on Facebook (or YouTube).  Star City News

  • Purdue women's basketball coach Katie Gearlds discussed team strategy ahead of the Big Ten Tournament opener against Oregon and said the contest will be played later this week.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue will face Northwestern today at 8:30 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston — the Boilermakers aim to rebound from recent losses while fans in Lafayette can listen on 96.5 FM.  Journal & Courier
