  • A Michigan-based fast-food chain will open its first Lafayette store on Tuesday at 2862 Old U.S. 231 S, operating daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The restaurant offers made-to-order sliders and chicken tenders — with opening week deals including rewards program draws and free food.  Journal & Courier
  • On Thursday, Lafayette celebrated the grand opening of Freitag-Weinhardt Inc. at 663 N. 36th Street as the new mechanical contractor offering design+fabrication, installation, and maintenance services.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two local superintendents mentored aspiring school leaders at the Indiana Aspiring Superintendents' Academy today; Dr. Matt Rhoda from Community Schools of Frankfort and Dr. Jim Hanna from Rossville Consolidated School District offered real-world guidance to prepare experienced administrators for future challenges.  WLFI
  • Purdue electrical and computer engineering student Jack McKenna was a finalist on Amazon Prime’s Beast Games hosted by Mr. Beast, finishing sixth and winning $45,000. He has celebrated with weekly watch parties at his fraternity’s Sigma Nu house.  Star City News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tippecanoe County and nearby areas had a severe drought with rainfall deficits of 2 to 8 inches and groundwater at 10% capacity as of yesterday. Forecasters say above-normal rain next week—bringing gradual relief for spring planting.  Journal & Courier
  • Tippecanoe County Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting a free native landscaping program at Lilly Nature Center on Mar. 13 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Attendees will learn about native plant choices plus view live examples outdoors in West Lafayette.  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Lafayette will set clocks forward at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 8 as daylight saving time begins, which means they will lose one hour of sleep.  Journal & Courier
  • Senate Bill 78 passed the state senate yesterday and now sits on the governor's desk. The bill bans cell phones, gaming systems, and smartwatches in schools and, if signed, will require school districts to develop a policy for keeping devices locked away next school year (lock rules must be set by each district).  Star City News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Faith Christian girls soccer coach David Ungaro will not return for the 2026 season after 14 seasons — he led the team to its lone state championship in 2024. The school declined comment on his departure as it prepares to name a new coach.  Journal & Courier
  • West Lafayette High School boys basketball seniors Drew Whitlock and Ben Werth led the team to an 18-4 record as they prepare for their final regular season game tonight at home. They will enter sectionals next Wednesday at Logansport High School at 6 p.m.  Star City News
  • Purdue basketball lost 76-74 to Michigan State at Mackey Arena on Feb. 27 but improved its rebounding by out-rebounding the Spartans 27-25 & boosting second-chance points. Coach Painter said the team addressed past rebounding issues with new transfer Oscar Cluff.  Journal & Courier
