COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Seniors gathered at Traditions of Lafayette on Feb. 26 for Creative Connections, a monthly storytelling event that eased isolation and shared memories; over 30 community members joined to form new bonds. The event will return on March 25 (with plans to use a larger dining room for better sound).  Journal & Courier

BUSINESS NEWS

  • South Korean chipmaker SK hynix says it is too late to stop its $4 billion microchip factory near Salisbury and Kalberer Roads in West Lafayette because residents did not seek a preliminary injunction. A court hearing on the issue is set for March 9 at Tippecanoe Circuit Court.  Journal & Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jefferson High School senior Deja Byrd received a $1,000 McDonald's scholarship on Feb. 26 for her leadership, service and influence as a state-selected Black History Maker of Tomorrow. School officials noted her positive impact as a role model and dance team captain.  Journal & Courier
  • Harrison High School teacher McCord Snider is a finalist for the Indiana Golden Owl Award given by the Indiana FFA. This is his fourth consecutive nomination, and he stands to win $3,000 if selected.  Star City News
  • Purdue Extension is offering Farm Shield, a virtual series to guide Indiana farmers in estate planning, succession and risk management. Sessions run on Wednesday evenings in March from 7-8:30 p.m., and registration costs $40 with accommodations available if requested today.  Journal & Courier
  • The Indiana Senate approved Senate Bill 78 — a ban on cellphone use by students throughout the school day — and sent it to Gov. Mike Braun for his signature. The measure will take effect July 1 if signed and aims to reduce classroom distractions.  WLFI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city approved the purchase of the former Pop's B&K Root Beer stand at 1701 Main St for $105,000 this morning as part of its plan to revitalize Five Points—options include creating green space or housing, and neighbors voiced concern over losing historic character.  Journal & Courier
  • Lafayette approved buying the old Pop’s B&K stand lot for $105,000 on Thursday; the city plans to tear down the building and create greenspace + gather community input for future plans.  Star City News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Tippecanoe County Coroner's Office released its 2025 report showing a 40% drop in drug overdose deaths from 20 in 2024 to 12 last year. The report also noted that 21 eligible decedents were authorized for organ and tissue donation.  WLFI
  • Franciscan Health Foundation delivered Stop the Bleed kits on Wednesday to Lafayette School Corporation, benefiting 587 classrooms. The kits include bandages, gauze, tourniquets, gloves and scissors for emergency care.  Star City News
  • West Lafayette Meijer is hosting a heart health expo on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., where residents can get free screenings for blood pressure and cholesterol and receive giveaways including wellness booklets, toothpaste + vitamin c supplements.  Star City News
