  • Christopher Lee, a Lafayette native and lifelong Purdue women’s basketball fan, met his favorite player, Nya Smith, on Thursday in West Lafayette through nonprofit Dream On 3. His family celebrated the moment (a milestone in his journey overcoming early challenges) with pride.  WLFI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Right Steps has received unanimous county approval to rezone two sites (1201 N. 18th St. and 1200 N. 19th St.) on the north end for its fifth child-care center. The measure now moves to City Council for a final vote scheduled for Monday, Mar. 2 at 6 p.m.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue University's Chief Marketing Officer, Kelly Hiller, was selected as a 2026 Inspiring Woman honoree for her work with Purdue Brand Studio — her leadership helped boost the university's national rankings.  Star City News
  • Lafayette area schools and the health department will host a social media education night for parents on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Greater Lafayette Career Academy. Speakers will cover internet dangers and tips to protect youth on video games and social media.  Star City News

  • Superior 1 Judge Kevin McDaniel was sworn in today with a historic Bible once owned by Helen Gougar (a law pioneer who fought for women's rights) loaned by the Tippecanoe County Historical Association to honor local legal history.  Journal & Courier
  • A public forum by the Tippecanoe County Local Child Fatality Review Team is set for Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the County Office Building from 10 a.m. to noon to discuss 2025 child death trends and online safety, featuring Deputy Prosecutor Elyse A. Madigan and Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jason Biss.  WLFI
  • Senator Ron Alting introduced a resolution on Thursday at the State House to honor Abby Williams and Libby German with support from Carroll County family and law enforcement. The resolution will lead to a two-year process to rename a bridge on I-25 near Deer Creek.  Star City News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Purdue researchers are developing a smart pacifier to monitor infant breathing using sound sensing technology after receiving a $1.2 million NIH grant. Clinical trials with newborns in partnership with UAB will begin in 2027, and the device may later support home care and a smartphone app.  Star City News
  • Meijer has recalled over 211,500 children’s sleepwear sets that do not meet flammability standards and may pose a burn risk. Customers in local stores are urged to stop using the garments and return them for a refund, with no injuries reported.  Journal & Courier

  • NBA rookie Brooks Barnhizer returned to Lafayette Jeff during his All-Star break to sign autographs & reconnect with the gym where he launched his basketball career. He became the first Tippecanoe County high school player to appear in an NBA game and now competes with Oklahoma City Thunder and their G League affiliate.  Journal & Courier
  • Rossville wrestlers Jacob Cole and Jacob Weaver—who train consistently with teammate Lincoln Frazee—will compete in their first match today at Gainbridge Fieldhouse as they aim to become the first state champion duo in school history.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue senior forward Trey Kaufman-Renn explained lessons learned from past matchups as the Boilers gear up for the rivalry rematch with Indiana at Mackey Arena today, highlighting adjustments to improve their play.  Journal & Courier
  • McCutcheon girls basketball — led by versatile point guard Lillie Graves at 6‑foot‑2 and flexible roles — has won three straight sectinals and will head to its second semistate matchup against Portage this weekend.  Journal & Courier
  • Lafayette Jeff juniors RJ McCoy and Robert McKinney, the first pair since 2014 to reach state, are set to wrestle tonight at the IHSAA state championship as coach Tom Miller begins his farewell at season end. McCoy improved to 37-3 after a strong semistate while McKinney posted a 30-6 record.  Journal & Courier
  • Harrison junior swimmer Rocco Tajc tore his Achilles on Nov. 22, ending his season but he now helps coach his team for Saturday’s sectional championships at West Lafayette High School (1 p.m.). He remains focused on steady recovery and guiding teammates to success.  Journal & Courier
