COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eight new volunteer advocates were sworn in on Feb. 11 to support seniors and incapacitated adults in Tippecanoe County through a joint effort by the Wabash Center and the county circuit court.  Journal & Courier
  • Photos show Mayor Roswarski judging the Lafayette VFW Post 1154 Super Chili Bowl Cook-off on Feb. 11 as County Commissioner Tom Murtaugh and Sheriff Bob Goldsmith also served as judges, marking a lively community event.  Star City News
  • From My Hands to Yours at Mount Hope Church offers free Valentine’s Day gifts on Wednesdays, providing children under 12 with goody bags that include books, jewelry, bread from Great Harvest, and coffee. The ministry now supplies homemade laundry detergent and fabric softener to help families (donations are collected on Mondays from 9-11 a.m.).  Star City News
  • West Lafayette Parks & Recreation Department announced the start of syrup tapping season at Celery Bog near the Lilly Nature Center parking lot. Buckets and tubing are in place to collect sap, with syrup produced at the Sugar Shack — tasting events planned later this month will offer insight into the process.  WLFI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Benton Central athletes Aiden Wetli and Brody Cox run WC Livestock, a pork packing business started in October (they have secured $20,000 in sales) while balancing school and sports. They plan to expand production to meet orders in Benton, Warren, and Tippecanoe counties.  Journal & Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Faculty at Purdue have demanded Provost Patrick Wolfe step down over 16 concerns (including firing DEI staff and slow hiring that harmed faculty and students). They called for a vote of no confidence in the University Senate, though Wolfe did not directly address the issues.  Star City News
  • Students from Faith Church Business Academy toured Greater Lafayette Commerce to learn about supporting local businesses and community growth, meeting President Mikel Berger and the team to discuss leadership, economic development, and workforce initiatives (including ties to schools, nonprofits, and government).  WLFI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bald eagles are returning to the Wabash River near the wastewater treatment plant, drawn by open water for fishing. Visitors should keep a football field’s distance (about 100 yards) and use binoculars to view the birds before they leave when warmer weather returns in early March.  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Region 4 Workforce Board received $1.2 million from the Indiana Department of Education’s Career Coaching Grant on Feb. 11 for its Career+ Pathways program & will use the funding to support career coaching initiatives for local job seekers.  Star City News

  • Franciscan Health Lafayette and Mental Health America Wabash Valley Region offer free QPR suicide prevention training on the fourth Wednesday of each month (Feb. 25, March 25, April 22, May 27, June 24, July 22) at 914 South St. Sessions run from 4 to 6 p.m.  Journal & Courier

  • Braden Smith broke the Purdue basketball record for most minutes played Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Pinnacle Bank Arena against Nebraska by surpassing E'Twaun Moore's 4,517-minute mark (he needed 27 extra minutes) in his 134th game.  Journal & Courier
