EDUCATION NEWS

  • Applications for the 2026 Columbian Park Zoo Teen program are open for local teens aged 14 to 17 to gain volunteer animal care experience; submit applications by Friday, March 13 + prepare to attend a group interview on March 29 or April 11 if selected.  WLFI
  • Purdue's largest student group looked back on its major 48-hour POCAR race, where 320 racers from 62 teams navigated 26 control points at Yellowwood State Park over the past weekend (the club also offers year-round outdoor adventures).  WLFI
  • Ronnie Wilbur, a Purdue linguistics professor, was named a fellow by the Linguistic Society of America for over five decades of work in sign language research. Her recognition honors key advances in ASL prosody and Deaf education (supported by notable grant funding).  Journal & Courier
  • Two new School Resource Officers from TSC, Deputy Caballero and Deputy McDermott, are undergoing training today with the National Association of School Resource Officers in Lafayette. The course covers legal procedures and skills for building positive and safe relationships with students.  WLFI
  • State Representative Sheila Klinker has filed House Bill 1170 to raise minimum teacher pay from $45,000 to $60,000 for K-12 educators in West Lafayette. If passed, the bill will take effect on June 30, 2027 and aims to help keep teachers in local schools.  WLFI
  • Good Samaritan Project is partnering with Purdue University — Imagination Station to host It Takes A Village Family STEM Day on Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children will enjoy hands-on STEM activities and parents will join vision-building sessions with structured programming and a shared meal.  Star City News

  • The Lafayette Fire Department urged residents to prepare for negative temperatures and heavy snowfall this weekend by safely heating their homes, clearing gutters, and pacing outdoor work (avoiding stoves and charcoal grills) to prevent frostbite.  Star City News

  • After Purdue basketball lost to UCLA, Braden Smith said late turnovers hurt the team. He stressed the need to reduce mistakes for future contests.  Journal & Courier
