COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tippecanoe County and eight surrounding counties will conduct a Point-in-Time Count on Jan. 29 to record homelessness levels and guide housing aid. Volunteers will meet at 515 Columbia St. in Lafayette from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and complete a two-hour shift (training is provided) to support the outreach effort.  Journal & Courier
  • Next Monday, the Tippecanoe County Public Library will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at the Jos N. Holman Branch (627 South Street) with keynote speaker Dr. Anne M. Edwards, while other branches will offer extended hours on MLK Day.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Purdue University and Google Public Sector launched a five-year partnership to boost AI education and research at Purdue. The deal provides access to advanced technology — including Tensor Processing Units — and creates a Google AI Hub at the Hall of Data Science and AI for students and researchers.  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Indiana Veterans Home has been awarded a third round of funding from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to help reduce its nursing shortage by funding recruitment and retention incentives for nursing staff; funds may be received quarterly or in lump sums.  WLFI
  • The West Lafayette Fire Department is planning to rezone Station No. 3 (which often handles two calls at once) to add a fire crew of 12 for faster responses on the north side of town. Construction will begin later this year and finish next year as WLFD hires and trains more firefighters.  Star City News
  • Mental Health America data shows suicide remains one of the top causes of death among youth, prompting state senator Ron Alting to introduce Senate Bill 269 for peer support programs in grades six to twelve. Alting will discuss the proposal at the Statehouse Wednesday, Jan. 21.  WLFI

SPORTS NEWS

  • Some Purdue fans in West Lafayette are setting aside longtime rivalries to support Indiana University in the College Football National Championship on Monday, Jan. 19, citing the Hoosiers’ undefeated season and strong leadership while many locals see the shift as a win for state pride.  Journal & Courier
  • Lafayette Jeff girls' basketball holds a 14-4 record and is preparing for final conference and playoff games, with a game against Anderson scheduled for tomorrow. Head coach Jenna Sullivan said the team is steadily building on strong teamwork and focused preparation.  Star City News
  • Braden Smith received a rare Purdue basketball trading card signed by him and teammate Fletcher Loyer. Local businessman Orlando Itin gifted him the card as a token of admiration following the team's record-breaking consecutive start.  Journal & Courier
  • Harrison’s Erin Cauble won the 190-pound title and Attica’s Aubrey Bartkowiak earned the 235-pound championship at the IHSAA state girls wrestling meet on Friday, Jan. 16. Cauble finished the season 35-0 while Bartkowiak dedicated her win to honoring a late teammate and coach.  Journal & Courier
