COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Indiana American Water shared advice for residents to insulate exposed pipes (by wrapping them and opening cabinets to let warm air in) and run a trickle of water to help prevent bursts during cold weather.  WLFI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Last Friday, Purdue University’s Board of Trustees approved adding an AI working competency as a new graduation requirement for undergraduates at the West Lafayette and Indianapolis campuses — the plan is set to roll out for incoming classes as early as fall 2026 under the Purdue Computes initiative.  Star City News
  • Three Purdue University faculty were named National Academy of Inventors fellows last Thursday — the highest professional distinction for academic inventors. Their induction ceremony will be in June 2026, and they join 23 other Purdue faculty who received this honor.  Star City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office will add seven AED machines to patrol cars using a 15k grant from the SIA Foundation to help officers respond quickly in emergencies. Sheriff Bob Goldsmith said the devices will fill a needed gap when volunteer firefighters and medics are not close.  Star City News
  • After the weekend's five inches of snow, West Lafayette declared a snow emergency and crews cleared main roads using 13 plows and over 200 tons of salt. The team finished primary routes in about 6-7 hours (despite subzero temperatures reducing salt's effectiveness) before moving into neighborhoods.  Star City News

  • A retrospective piece details how Purdue head coach Joe Tiller built a young coaching staff that helped bring Purdue its first Big Ten title in 33 years and a postseason bowl win in 2000 at West Lafayette, highlighting the coaches’ talent and teamwork + humble approach.  Journal & Courier
  • White County Special Olympians boosted community spirit at a high school basketball game in Lafayette on Dec. 12 and will attend games at every gym this season to promote sportsmanship.  Journal & Courier
