COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 30th annual Global Fest in West Lafayette on Sept. 20 celebrated diverse cultures with international food, dance and music—while community members expressed fear that recent government immigration policies could affect future events.  Journal & Courier
  • Wildcat Creek Winery will host a fundraiser this Thursday for the Greater Lafayette United Way, offering free wine tastings and a shopping event with local vendors at 3233 E. 200 N. in Lafayette from 5—7 p.m.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • NASA named two Purdue graduates, Yuri Kubo (40) and Adam Fuhrmann (34), as astronaut candidates from over 8,000 applicants, and they will begin nearly two years of training for trips to low Earth orbit, the moon and Mars.  Journal & Courier
  • Two Purdue University alumni, Adam Fuhrmann and Yuri Kubo, were selected for NASA’s astronaut candidate class and will train for nearly two years—preparing for missions to low Earth orbit, the moon, and Mars. Purdue continues its legacy as the Cradle of Astronauts.  WLFI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local groups are planning the fall DeTrash the Wabash cleanup on Oct. 18 at 9 a.m. Volunteers will meet at the Riverside Skating Rink in Tapawingo Park to get safety instructions and supplies before cleaning a nine mile stretch of the Wabash River — the event has removed over 20 tons of trash since 2011 and will offer free pizza during lunch.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue engineers released a study on electrification that shows it will help the climate and health but may strain the power grid by driving upgrade costs between $2,000 to $6,400 per household by 2050; experts said alternatives that do not require wires could lower expenses plus Duke Energy said it has plans to meet growing demand.  Star City News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Ivy Tech Journal — Courier has named 11 local high school football players as nominees for Week 5 Player of the Week with voting ending Friday at 12:01 a.m.; standout performances include North White freshman Mason DeBoard, who tied a state record with three kickoff return touchdowns, and West Lafayette junior Kojo Steffey, who gained 185 rushing yards with three touchdowns. Voters are invited to choose the top player from these key local performances.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue basketball announced its Fan Day for October 18 at Mackey Arena—doors will open at 9:30 a.m., the women’s scrimmage begins at 10 a.m., an autograph session is held at 11:45 a.m., and men’s practice starts at 1 p.m.—and the arena video boards will show Purdue football if the game overlaps.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue football announced that its home game against Illinois will begin at noon on Oct. 4 at Ross-Ade Stadium—televised on the Big Ten Network. The team gets an idle weekend after a 2-2 start and losses to USC and Notre Dame to prepare for the matchup.  Journal & Courier
