CRIME NEWS

  • Lafayette police said an overnight shooting at Tate and Lyle's North plant did not threaten the public— a victim sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital while police detained a person of interest.  Journal & Courier
  • Lafayette police are investigating a shooting that occurred just before midnight near Tate and Lyle + they are reviewing a report of a suspicious person on the property hours earlier to see if the events are connected.  WLFI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Purdue trustees approved a five-year, $25M contract with SMART USA Institute — the agreement is expected to secure about $49.5M in matching federal funds and includes a preemptive $30M purchase of semiconductor equipment to boost digital twin research at Birck Nanotechnology Center. University officials said the move is part of a broader billion-dollar public/private partnership aimed at advancing semiconductor manufacturing research.  Journal & Courier
  • Starting August 13, North 2nd Street between South and Columbia Streets in Lafayette will be closed for road and sidewalk access for a year—crews will build new riverfront apartments—motorists and pedestrians should use alternate routes until the project is complete on August 28.  Star City News
  • Today, Purdue’s Airport opened the Amelia Earhart Terminal to launch United Express flights—operated by SkyWest Airlines—to connect our community with Chicago and other cities. Officials said the new terminal was built with strong community support and that expanded amenities will improve travel options.  Star City News

  • Purdue professor Jerome Adams, the former U.S. surgeon general, criticized HHS on Aug. 5 for cutting nearly $500 million in mRNA vaccine research funding—he warned that reducing support for the technology could slow vaccine improvements and risk lives.  Journal & Courier
