CRIME NEWS

  • Officer James Jarrett earned the LPD’s Gold Merit Award after stopping a suspect armed with an axe during a domestic call on May 11th—he pushed the victim behind him and disarmed the man without firing his weapon, an act that likely saved a life.  Star City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Troopers Matthew Gill and Lance Warner joined Indiana State Police in Lafayette after graduating from the academy last month and are starting a three-month field training program before beginning solo patrol this fall. Both completed over 1,200 hours of training covering key skills—criminal law, emergency operations, crash investigations, and firearms handling, and they bring unique backgrounds from Carroll County and Cayuga.  Star City News
  • CityBus in Lafayette will offer free rides on all routes from August 11 until August 23 as it prepares to launch its new digital payment system, E-Z Fare, on August 25. Riders are urged to download the app ahead of time—ensuring a smooth transition when fares resume.  Star City News
  • Yeonsoo Go, a 20-year-old Purdue pharmacy student, was detained by ICE for an alleged visa overstay and released on Aug. 4 after five days in custody in Louisiana - her family and an immigration lawyer claim her visa is valid until December while ICE says it expired over two years ago.  Journal & Courier
  • Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has appointed Reagan Koester from Wadesville as the new Purdue student trustee for a two-year term while reappointing Sonny Beck, Malcolm DeKryger, and Shawn Taylor for three-year terms—Koester will serve on the Academic and Student Affairs and Physical Facilities Committees with an equal vote.  Journal & Courier
  • The Lafayette City Council held its first hearing on a proposed chicken ordinance on August 4th and approved it with a 5 to 3 vote (residents shared mixed views) as a final hearing is set for September 2nd (further public input is expected).  Star City News

  • Purdue football receiver Michael Jackson III—a fifth-year senior who played at USC and then Georgia—said he will celebrate touchdowns with a Michael Jackson-inspired dance including the moonwalk if he finds the end zone in upcoming games.  Journal & Courier
