Good morning, Lafayette. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 7th of July.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana public universities cut degree programs because there were not enough students as part of Gov. Mike Braun's effort to focus on in-demand fields; these changes were planned ahead of a new state law that took effect July 1. This decision affects campuses including Lafayette and others around the state.  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • West Lafayette will break ground on a new $71 million public safety center on July 15 that will combine the existing police station with a modern fire department building as it replaces the old Fire Station 2 and adds training, decontamination, and parking spaces. The facility is set to open in summer 2028.  Journal & Courier

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tri-County senior pitcher and first baseman Grayson Schneider was named the 2025 Journal & Courier Small Schools Baseball Player of the Year after striking out 125 batters — his changeup was sharpened by coach Denny Stitz, who coached him since his freshman year, and he helped lead the team to its first IHSAA sectional title since 2011.  Journal & Courier
  • Daniel Jacobsen earned a gold medal with USA Basketball at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Switzerland before returning to West Lafayette after recovering from a broken tibia last November. Purdue basketball said he will play off the bench—his shot blocking is expected to help as the team begins the season.  Journal & Courier
