Lafayette marked its bicentennial with Founders Day events at Columbian Park on May 24 and May 25.

The celebrations featured baseball games, film showings, field days, and historic exhibits that honored the city’s early days — a lively tribute to its 200-year history.

Indiana State Police arrested Claudian Rivero Sombra, 35, after he led a high-speed chase on I-65 near Tippecanoe County on May 25—troopers ended the pursuit using a tire deflation device and found suspected cocaine and marijuana in his car.

Lafayette's bicentennial celebration features a Costume Ball on June 28 (with ticket sales closing May 30) that encourages historical costumes and offers prizes for best attire; the 44 planned events over the year also include youth contests (with essays, poetry and exhibits) to mark 200 years of local history.

With school out in Lafayette, high school students are encouraged to take summer jobs to gain valuable work experience.

Purdue University will hold a public hearing on June 2 at 10 a.m. to review a proposal for changing international student tuition and fees for the 2025–26 and 2026–27 academic years.

The review will address adjustments specific to the West Lafayette campus.

Today, Concord Road in Lafayette is closed between Daugherty Drive and Olympia Drive for repairs to aging railroad tracks — the road is expected to reopen on May 30.

Franciscan Health WorkingWell marks its 20th anniversary this year while serving Indiana businesses with occupational health services—expanding from a June 2005 regional program to 18 offices.

Tim Ross, director of employer solutions, said the program continues to evolve to help control medical costs and meet business needs.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the Executive Director of West Central Indiana National Alliance on Mental Illness said NAMI will soon launch a Crisis Response Team to help de-escalate community crises.

Moore explained that low insurance coverage for mental health care creates stigma and limits access to services (including self-stigma and stigma by association) and noted that the team (designed to provide immediate support) will work to close this gap.
