A Memorial Day service held Monday afternoon at Columbian Park honored veteran heroes and drew a respectful crowd (local residents gathered to pay tribute).
At the Indiana State Veterans Home, a Memorial Day ceremony honored fallen soldiers as the community retired flags — over 3,000 headstones were decorated to remember those who never returned.

The Purdue Board of Trustees approved Mitch Daniels as interim president of Purdue University effective July 1 and he will serve until a new president is chosen as a national search begins.
Daniels, who previously led the university for 10 years, replaces Mung Chiang who is leaving for Northwestern University.
The Indiana Department of Transportation will close U.S. 24 in White + Cass counties from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, June 1 for seal coating work between State Road 39 and U.S. 35 with a detour via State Road 39, 119, 16 and U.S. 35 for four days.
The IHSAA state baseball tournament starts this week and local teams will compete in eight sectionals; matchups include teams like Central Catholic + Harrison playing at venues such as Loeb Stadium and Logansport, with games running through Monday, June 1.
The Ivy Tech Journal & Courier has opened voting for Athlete of the Week showcasing record-breaking performances in track, golf and softball from the week of May 18-23.
Votes are accepted until Friday at noon with winners to be announced Saturday morning.
