COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbian Park will host a bicentennial weekend starting Saturday to celebrate Lafayette's 200th birthday with a pop-up exhibit in the Carousel Building, discounted zoo and pedal boat rides, and a high school baseball game at Loeb Stadium. Sunday will feature a field day with games and a Finding Nemo screening—Monday will include a Memorial Day program with live music.  WLFI
  • Tippecanoe Senior Services hosted its first annual senior prom in Lafayette, giving seniors a chance to enjoy dancing, food, drinks, and live music while raising $6,540 for future events — seniors like Joan and Mike celebrated their first prom experience with joy.  Star City News

CRIME NEWS

  • At 5:30 p.m. Friday, a 59-year-old Lafayette man tried to rob a customer by demanding cash from an ATM at the Shell Gas Station at the corner of Indiana 28 and U.S. 52, but the suspect fled when the victim alerted others—police later used a K9 unit to locate him near the Lincoln Lodge—and he has since been released without charges.  Journal & Courier

  • State Farm donated $25,000 to Junior Achievement of Greater Lafayette on Monday to support its BizTown and Finance Park programs that teach local students financial literacy and business skills + the donation highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to community education.  Star City News

  • Lafayette closed 9th Street between Twyckenham Boulevard and Beck Lane for railroad crossing repairs after local drivers complained about dangerous potholes—work will run from May 19th through May 23rd—while nearby businesses remain open.  Star City News

  • Purdue has named Raquel Atawo as the new women's tennis coach, replacing long-time coach Laura Glitz after nearly two decades of leadership. Atawo, a former pro who once faced Serena Williams at Wimbledon, comes from Washington State — Athletic Director Mike Bobinski announced the hire on Monday.  Journal & Courier
  • Rossville infielder Finley Gibson recovered from labrum surgery quicker than expected and returned to the lineup on April 21, posting a .438 average, eight doubles and 13 RBI as her team prepares for the IHSAA 2A sectionals on May 27 — her strong comeback shows her commitment on the field.  Journal & Courier
