COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local letter carriers are partnering with Food Finders Food Bank to collect nonperishable food placed by residents’ mailboxes this Saturday, May 9, as they work extra hours to boost support for community food banks facing rising costs (a vital local effort).  Star City News
  • Lafayette will host its Clean Sweep event on May 16 from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and residents can pick up supplies at City Hall (20 N. Sixth St.) on May 14 and 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers may help keep the city clean.  Journal & Courier

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Visit Lafayette, West Lafayette highlighted how local tourism boosts the economy with regional attractions, Purdue sports, community parks + local dining spots; this effort generated over $630 million in spending and supported more than 8,000 jobs.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Professor Zubin Jacob at Purdue was named a Guggenheim fellow to support his research on thermal imaging, microscopy + space telescopy. The award will help him study the limits of resolution and thermal vision in his ongoing work.  Star City News
  • Students at Central Catholic Junior High won two state championships in Indiana’s Academic Super Bowl on May 7, 2026 + the school earned the social studies title by answering 22 of 25 questions and the interdisciplinary title with a score of 21 points against 50 schools statewide.  Journal & Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Braun extended the suspension of gas sales and excise taxes for 30 more days (doubling pump savings for Hoosiers). May rates include a 23¢ usage tax and a 36¢ excise tax, with Tippecanoe County gas averaging $4.87 per gallon.  Star City News

  • Harrison girls tennis senior Elliot Flanery has won nine matches in a row after recovering from a severe ankle injury (from a 2024 backflip accident) that nearly ended her career. She now leads the team with determination.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue Softball senior outfielder Khloe Banks talked about her college journey, growing up in Florida, and staying at Purdue in episode four of Sports 18's series Dugout Dingers (a local highlight series) recorded in Lafayette.  WLFI
