ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices have climbed to $4.99 at several Lafayette stations from $3.80 last week, causing concerns for commuters & vacationers. AAA records show near-record highs and community members expect relief measures from policymakers soon.  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Purdue University received a $7 million donation from alum Bill McFadden and his wife Sharon to create the Sharon and Bill McFadden Scholarship Fund, which will support merit-based engineering scholarships at its main and Indianapolis campuses. The funding will help Purdue Engineering attract talented students.  Star City News
  • Harrison High School senior Lilyann Peters was honored on April 30 for winning Indiana’s FFA Proficiency Award in Environmental Sciences for reviving the school courtyard with native plants (partnered with Tippecanoe County Soil and Water Conservation District); she will represent Indiana at the national convention in October.  Journal & Courier
  • Klondike Elementary teacher Andrea Bornino was named TSC Elementary Teacher of the Year (18 years in physical education) and will represent TSC as a candidate for Indiana's Teacher of the Year program. Her lessons help students build essential sports skills like bike riding in local neighborhoods.  Star City News
  • Purdue University received a $20 million donation from the Ricks Family Institute to create an institute for healthcare systems innovation at its Indianapolis campus in the Daniels School of Business + to advance One Health. Purdue President Mung Chiang said the gift will boost strategic growth.  Star City News

  • The West Lafayette Police Department celebrated three milestones this month as Officer Jeff Dunscomb marked 35 years, Dispatcher Jordyn Farrell 5 years, and Officer Noah Smith one year of service+ the department thanked them on Facebook.  Star City News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Purdue baseball snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over Southern Indiana on Wednesday night at Alexander Field in West Lafayette. The team, now 29-15, will host Murray State today at 6 p.m. (the series opener) on campus.  WLFI
