COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pride Lafayette is celebrating its 22nd anniversary by hosting the Second Chance Prom, which gives people of all ages a chance to be their true selves. The event will be held today from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Coyote Crossing Golf Club (tickets cost $10 each).  WLFI
  • Cason Family Park in West Lafayette is preparing for its grand reopening in May as construction continues with updates including two playgrounds—one designed for younger kids featuring whimsical owl structures inspired by Celery Bog and a renovated Morris Schoolhouse. The park will also offer a fish-stocked pond and kayak and canoe rentals to enhance outdoor fun.  Journal & Courier
  • Blooms of Healing—a free event for grieving mothers—will be held May 4 at 848 Main Street in downtown Lafayette from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., as The Good Samaritan Project and Blooms & Petals organize the event to support mothers coping with the loss of a child due to various tragedies.  Star City News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Authorities suspect a tire malfunction caused Purdue University’s Boilermaker Special to veer off U.S. 52 near Wyandotte Road in Tippecanoe County, where it crashed and killed the driver of another vehicle while two Purdue students were treated and released from a Lafayette hospital — Indiana State Police are assisting with the investigation.  Star City News

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities are investigating the death of 25-year-old Austin Davis Fisher, who was found near Purdue University on April 25 in the 500 block of Northwestern Avenue — a forensic autopsy is scheduled for Monday, April 28.  Star City News
  • Jimmy Rae Wallen Jr., 45, was arrested late Friday after deputies discovered heroin in his vehicle parked outside the Tippecanoe County Jail—he now faces two Level 5 felony counts and a habitual offender enhancement for past convictions.  Star City News
  • Christopher David Newman, 41, from Attica was arrested late Thursday night in Tippecanoe County after Lafayette police stopped his pickup near State Road 38 East and Kingsway Drive and discovered 12.48 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and synthetic urine that he said was years old—he now faces a Level 5 felony charge for methamphetamine and misdemeanor charges for paraphernalia and synthetic urine.  Star City News

  • Sen. Ron Alting said on Friday that efforts to criminalize homelessness failed during the 2025 legislative session and similar measures will not become law this year. He pledged to continue opposing such proposals and stressed that homelessness should be managed with support services (mental health, addiction, and employment) rather than criminal penalties.  Star City News

  • Mackey Arena in West Lafayette will host the inaugural IHSAA boys volleyball state championship on May 31, featuring two semifinal matches and the final in a venue known for Purdue basketball events (136 programs are set to compete statewide).
