COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tippecanoe County is hosting a community baby shower that will offer free resources, education, and baby supplies for pregnant and newly postpartum moms who live in the county—registration for the event closes at 8 a.m. on May 1—.  Star City News
  • Columbian Park Zoo in Lafayette will open for its 117th season on Saturday with spring hours from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., charging $3 for ages 3 and up while children under 2 and members enter free. The zoo will extend hours to 7 p.m. on May 24, open its train ride for $3, and keep some birds indoors due to avian influenza—pedal boats are set to return by Memorial Day weekend.  Journal & Courier
  • The Scouting 4 Eggs Adult Easter Egg Hunt will take place Saturday night at Franklin Cary camp in Lafayette where 50,000 eggs—each holding a prize or raffle ticket—will be hidden across a hundred acres of forest. Prizes include sports tickets, gift cards, memorabilia and a big-screen TV while raffles will offer a shotgun and a 9 mm handgun that winners can claim a week after a background check, and registration is capped at 1,500 participants.  Journal & Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Elementary students in Greater Lafayette learned entrepreneurship through hands-on projects that had them use an assembly line to make Valentine’s Day products — teachers said the project taught them teamwork and creative business skills.  Star City News
  • Mrs. Dunbar’s third-grade high-ability class visited the Tippecanoe County Historical Association’s traveling bicentennial museum today to learn about Lafayette’s 200-year history. The students used a crossword puzzle to explore key local facts as part of the bicentennial celebration.  Star City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Six Indiana State Police troopers from Lafayette were honored at the 2024 Top Cop Awards for their efforts in combating impaired driving—Trooper Mitchell McKinney led with 63 arrests as the troopers made 328 OWI arrests, part of 1,078 county arrests.  WLFI
  • Gov. Mike Braun signed an executive order that requires a state-affiliated nonprofit aiding economic development to disclose its funders retroactively and moving forward—organizations must file missed financial reports by the end of the year. Braun also signed two other orders that reassessed economic development regions and set wage growth and job creation targets—steps designed to spread development across more areas.  WLFI
