CRIME NEWS

  • The Lafayette Police Department is investigating an incident at the Tippecanoe County Courthouse where a protest turned tense when a driver, who picked up a firearm after a protester made contact while he was turning at 3rd and Columbia Streets on Saturday afternoon, was detained—early reports say the gun was not aimed at anyone.  WLFI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lafayette Fire Department is accepting applications for its 2026 firefighter recruit class and applicants may apply until May 31. Interested candidates must meet the age requirement (21–40) and if hired, will join a 16-week training program (offering competitive salary and strong benefits).  WLFI
  • Hundreds gathered on Saturday outside the Tippecanoe County Courthouse for a national Hands Off protest with the 50501 movement—protesting plans to downsize government services and changes affecting human rights.  WLFI

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the start of baseball and softball seasons, six local players were named Athlete of the Week candidates from games played between March 31st and April 5th. Readers may cast unlimited votes until Friday at noon & top male and female vote-getters will be announced on Saturday morning.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue women's basketball added its first transfer portal guard as former Northern Arizona guard Taylor Feldman will join the team for the 2025-26 season — she averaged 16.4 points, 3.9 assists and three rebounds per game and earned All Big Sky Conference honors last season.  Journal & Courier
  • McCutcheon sophomore guard Brody Baker worked hard after practice and helped his team finish 13-9 while scoring 31 points with a game-winning three-pointer against West Lafayette. He will play in the Indiana All-Star Futures Games on June 2 (coaches praise his strong work ethic and quiet leadership).  Journal & Courier
  • Carmel High School offensive lineman Sankeerth Veluri announced his commitment to join Purdue football as a walk-on — he previously committed to Army and held offers from Ivy League programs, Indiana State and a MAC team.
