COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Wabash Center welcomed a new class of volunteer advocates during a ceremony led by Tippecanoe County Circuit Court Judge Sean Persin. The advocates will support elderly adults with guardianship needs + assist those unable to represent themselves.  WLFI

  • Local businesses are gearing up for Valentine’s Day with a spike in orders for chocolates, roses and dining reservations as shops report brisk pre-holiday sales and restaurants fill Saturday's bookings. McCord Candies and Roth Florist confirm high demand and careful inventory planning (as orders increase).  Star City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Purdue University’s Presidential Lecture Series will host a conversation between President Mung Chiang and documentarian Timothy Ferris on Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. in the Stewart Center’s Fowler Hall. They will discuss how science drives democracy and economic growth, and tickets are required for the free event.  Star City News
  • Faculty from Purdue in Lafayette demanded Provost Patrick Wolfe’s resignation yesterday, citing more than a dozen issues including alleged international student bans, DEI cuts that led to staff firings, and hiring freezes that disrupted campus operations. The group says these actions have undermined trust in his leadership.  Journal & Courier
  • The Court of Appeals of Indiana will visit Tippecanoe County on Feb. 17 at Ivy Tech's Lafayette Campus to host live arguments in the Martinez v. Linderwell case and invite the public to ask judges questions from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  WLFI
  • A 6th grader from Klondike Middle School, Apoorva, won first place in the Scholastic Chess of Indiana Middle School Junior Varsity Individual Championship — his focus and strategy helped him outplay competitors and bring pride to his school.  Star City News

  • Indiana airports face hangar shortages as private plane ownership grows and waiting lists extend for years, despite infrastructure funds improving runways and terminals. Purdue University Airport in West Lafayette received $1.5 million for a new terminal, and officials urge creative long-term leasing as a solution & more upgrades are planned.  WLFI

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A Tippecanoe County rental report shows West Lafayette Purdue students have seen 21% rent increases since 2021 amid growing concerns over affordable housing, transportation, and parking. The report also noted rising vacancy rates (partly linked to State Street changes) and emphasized the need for improved transit education.  Star City News

  • The IHSAA girls basketball sectional finals showcased five key players (x-factors) from McCutcheon, Rensselaer Central, Carroll, Fountain Central, and West Central who made critical plays that helped secure their sectional titles on Feb. 10.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue basketball beat Nebraska in overtime 80-77 in a tough Big Ten game at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 10. The Boilermakers nearly lost a 22-point lead before Oscar Cluff and Braden Smith made key plays (with Cluff scoring the winning basket) to secure the win.  Journal & Courier
