  • Local vendors will gather and live music will entertain shoppers at the indoor winter market (501 Bistro Atrium on 5th Street) this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, with the first 50 guests receiving a free tote bag as they shop local products.  Star City News

  • Yesterday, Purdue’s restored Beck Barn opened as The Lawrence, a new restaurant serving seasonal dishes that celebrate Indiana agriculture. It is located at 150 McCutcheon Drive in the Discovery Park District and features indoor, patio, and private dining (for intimate events).  Journal & Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Purdue professor Erica Carlson explained that low winter humidity leads to stronger static shocks and advised residents to use humidifiers and keys on metal to discharge built-up charge. A Purdue lab demo with a Van de Graaf generator showed objects jumping quickly+ a tip to manage indoor humidity for comfort.  Journal & Courier

  • Late Wednesday, the City of Lafayette approved $386,728 in opioid settlement funding to Valley Oaks Health to support evidence-based programs for prevention, treatment and recovery — part of a long-term initiative yielding nearly $3.37 million in funds.  WLFI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Severe winter storms cancelled 33 blood drives across Indiana and the Red Cross urges donors to help as hospitals face shortages - Lafayette donors can visit the Northend Community Center on Feb. 6 (noon-5:30 p.m.) or Feb. 10 (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) and receive a $20 e-gift card.  Journal & Courier
  • Tippecanoe County health officials reported rising suicide trends yesterday, noting more elderly suicides plus unusual violent female cases, and have begun alerting parents to risky social media trends to protect youth.  Journal & Courier

  • Faith Christian beat Central Catholic 44-38 in the IHSAA girls basketball playoffs on Feb. 4 as senior Caya Stillings drove final minutes and set up a layup by Sophie McCain (securing the program's first playoff win over its Lafayette rival); the team faces Riverton Parke on Friday at 6:30 p.m.  Journal & Courier
  • McCutcheon football coach Josh Strasser resigned yesterday (Feb. 4) to focus on his family and shift the program's direction, leaving behind the strong Lafayette Youth Football League he helped launch. His departure came after a challenging season that prompted the move.  Journal & Courier
