- ➤ Zeigler Subaru and Lafayette Family Shelter will host a free winter coat giveaway for local children tomorrow from 3 to 5 p.m. at the shelter on Elmwood Ave — families are encouraged to register on the shelter website. Journal & Courier
- ➤ Today, Purdue Federal Credit Union announced a $60,000 investment to fund United Way's free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program that helps low-to moderate-income families file tax returns at offices in Lafayette and Crawfordsville. WLFI
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A malfunctioning fire standpipe at the Rise on Chauncey apartments on Wed., Jan. 14 sent thousands of gallons of water cascading down the stairs, causing first-floor damage but no injuries; firefighters quickly closed open valves & urged residents not to tamper with fire equipment. - ➤ Teacher Sarah Harmon from Dayton Elementary was honored with a Golden Apple Award by Greater Lafayette Commerce, which gave her $1000 to support new classroom projects (she said the funds would open doors for innovative learning). She credited her success to the teamwork among students and fellow educators. Star City News

- ➤ Indiana has one of the highest electric rate increases and on Jan. 8, lawmakers introduced Senate Bill 272 to let large energy users secure power from suppliers or generate their own energy. Supporters say the measure may help curb future rate hikes for customers. WLFI
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Franciscan OrthoIndy Surgery Center in West Lafayette held its dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday at the corner of Cumberland Avenue and U.S. 231. The new center offers an orthopedic clinic, urgent care, physical therapy and imaging services including total joint replacement and sports medicine. Star City News
- ➤ Lafayette Fire Department will host a blood drive on Feb. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside City Hall on 6th Street, partnering with Versiti Blood Center of Indiana; appointments are recommended and walk-ins welcome. Star City News

- ➤ The Tippecanoe Sports Collectible Show will take place at the Fairgrounds' West Wing in Lafayette on Saturday, Jan. 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., where Purdue greats will sign autographs and vendors will offer sports memorabilia + trading cards. - ➤ Former Purdue men’s basketball writer Jeff Washburn, who spent over 40 years covering Tippecanoe sports, will be posthumously inducted into the USBWA Hall of Fame on April 6 at the NCAA men’s Final Four in Indianapolis (the honor recognizes his long career and lasting legacy). Journal & Courier
- ➤ Rensselaer Central linebacker Logan Metzger was named Journal + Courier Defensive Player of the Year after posting 136 tackles, four sacks and five forced fumbles.
