EDUCATION NEWS

  • Purdue University named Matthew R. Conaway as the new 6th Director of the All-American Marching Band. He has served Purdue in several roles & his appointment marks another milestone in his long commitment to the institution.  Star City News
  • Kitchen Academy will offer a hands-on cooking class for kids ages 6-15 on Jan. 10 from noon to 2 p.m. at Margerum City Hall; students learn kitchen safety, knife use, and recipe basics while registration costs $25 & must be completed online.  Star City News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ivy Tech Journal & Courier invites Lafayette sports fans to vote for the first Athlete of the Week of 2026 for performances in IHSAA championships during Dec. 29-Jan. 3 (voting closes Thursday at noon).  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue football updated its transfer portal moves when two players entered Monday and safety Smiley Bradford withdrew his name to return to the team. Texas running back Jerrick Gibson + former USC guard Micah Banuelos also joined commitments as Purdue builds its 2026 roster.  Journal & Courier
  • On Dec. 30, Central Catholic forward Calvin Reisman hosted Lafayette area top plays of the week, featuring standout plays from boys + girls basketball and IHSAA girls wrestling sectionals.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue football coaches used their USC connection to secure two offensive linemen. Guard Micah Banuelos committed Monday morning and transfer player Makai Saina signed to strengthen the front line.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue football added defensive lineman Jeremy Lewis Jr. to its 2026 signing class on Jan. 5. The NJCAA All-American from Iowa Western recorded 24 tackles (including nine sacks) and joins Purdue as the team looks to strengthen its defense.  Journal & Courier
  • On Monday, Jan. 5, Purdue safety Smiley Bradford announced he would remain with the football team after entering the transfer portal + his decision helps stabilize a secondary that lost three starters due to expired eligibility.  Journal & Courier
  • Purdue football added former USC offensive lineman Micah Banuelos, who played five games last season, as the team seeks to rebuild its offensive line. Banuelos announced his commitment on Monday + brings Big Ten experience to boost the Boilermakers' performance.  Journal & Courier
  • On Monday, Jan. 5, Purdue football center Bradyn Joiner (from Auburn) entered the NCAA transfer portal after starting all 12 games in 2025, leaving left tackle Joey Tanona as the only confirmed returning offensive lineman for 2026. The team will adjust its lineup this season.  Journal & Courier
